Floyd Mayweather Jr’s demand for 100 million dollars for him to fight WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquaio later this year have scuppered the fight that boxing needs, and the fans want to witness.
Don King may have been drafted in, and Bob Arum has settled to a promoters’ truce with him, but such demands appear to have been a waste of time for all parties concerned.
Top Rank head Arum said: “If Floyds gets a hundred million, then Manny would have to fight for nothing.” Not completely true, but you get his drift. Mayweather, 34, a five-weight world champion has several complex situations ongoing outside the boxing, and a law suit filed against him by Pacquiao for PED allegations.
In athletic terms, Mayweather has fought twice since December 2008 - almost three and a half years – and all indications point to the fact that the Las Vegan does not really want this fight. In the same period, Pacquiao has fought five times, and faces Shane Mosley, defending the WBO welterweight belt, on May 7.
Floyd Mayweather then said in a later interview "pac agreed to the piss, blood, random, semen tests but they aint agreeing to 100 million, the money isnt right"
The richest fight in boxing history, which could gross $200 million, will just have to wait. Funny old world.
