nowadays everyone is gettin PPV time... Now cotto will fight on PPV this week... and at the same time that Hopkins is fighting Tarver! WTF! Boxing is just gettin way too expensive!
Marketing wise, the $$$ signs must be rollin in. Soon we'll be outpriced to attend these fights let alone watch them. The don machine at work. If u overprice it and they still come, you doing something right.... sad
Guess the same could be said for gas...
what the hell...what was the point of sharing this article? I like how the author says he was 'once the best' then earlier he says 'ducked and dodged many fighters' lol
I was ROFL when I caught that part, LOL
I know a thing or two about body mechanics... and I know a thing or two about boxing. And the first post on this forum is right on the money and I tell you why.
First off, anyone here who says that Roy Jones was not a gifted fighter is definitely hating. Did he dodge some fighters throughout his career? Sure... but so does everyone else. Some his doing, some not. I dont know the details in every situation, but I can definitely say that some evading was not done by him.
Second, he has probably one of the fastest and the sharpest reflexes in boxing. Now... We all know the trasition to his slump was his rise to heavy and fall to light heavy. But here are the technicals. Just look at his body physique today, and his physique prior to turning heavy. Most notably, his back is wider as he has a blocky frame unlike his old days when he was a slim and cut looking athelete.
What I noticed that made him technically superior was not just his speed and reflexes... it was also his ability to make you tire in the ropes as he was able to evade assaults at close quarters... and immediately, showboat in extremely accurate punches.
Roy Jones of today tires against the ropes. You can see it in his first fight with Tarver. You can see it in his fight with johnson.
And if anyone saw rd 5 in his last meeting with Tarver, you can see how easy it is for him to beat tarver. I believe Tarver would of been another glen kelly... another clint woods... but because if this deficit that incurred with the sharp decrease in stamina, his demise is coming way too early. And Tarver got 5 minutes of fame that should not have in the first place. But its ok... thats boxing. Trip ups, bad decisions by fighters, and bad judging can make or break a fighter... while having nothing to do with talent and skill. Hense why we have this fictituous P4P list.
So how can we get a fresh roy jones back? He definitely needs to be a heavy weight once again. And with the division the way it is today, I believe that a good 3 year commitment to it can put him on top and a heavy weight champion again. Stamina is not much of an issue as it is in the lighter weights since the big guys dont move as much. Throwing one much at a time and less combos is more acceptable in the heavy weight division... just look at lennox lewis. He was a jab jab right cross kind of fighter.
So to conclude... if he wins this july, moves up, and fights like a heavy, we'll have several more years of roy jones... and maybe he'll even touch the P4P list again.
if it was all about the lucky punch and fear factor of that punch, then why did he have such a hard time with tarver in their first meeting???
Trust my experience and analitical throughts about this issue folks. Stamina is key to why he is not throwing his combinations freely anymore.
He just looks tired as hell once he stays in the corner for too long... Just look at his face when he was fighting glen johnson. He runs out of steam early on. His punch output is soooo much less than his past and even then..... EVEN THEN.... he still runs out of steam in the 11th or 12th rd. That is a fact my friends....
Weight and muscle loss is never an excuse for a prizefighter who schedules his own fights. If he can't make weight in healthy fashion by a certain date, change the date. It's that simple.
its not that simple. if u are never the same no matter how well u train, then its either fight, or quit boxing....
Nothing is just simply black or white
He got KO'd in their first fight because of an EXTREMELY lucky shot! In a career spaning so many years, that was bound to happen. The second fight with Johnson was a psychological problem with Roy I think. I want to be careful not to come up with more excuses but its just that for a career like Roy Jones', its hard to see that he has deteriorated so quickly. I think this fight will be a normal Roy Jones. Not an elite Roy, not a mean RJ, just a fun boxin Roy Jones Jr. I don't think he can ko tarver easily as Tarver is a very big solid heavy weight. But I do think that the odds are in his favor greatly that he'll be super fast and outpoint him to death till the end. As for another one punch KO again for Tarver, I don't see it happening! Lightning only strikes once!
Well... Malignaggi did say that Cotto wont be able to find him... so it shouldn't make a difference right. In fact, the heavier cotto is, the slower he is and the faster he'll tire... Paulie, STOP CRYING and looking for the excuse for when your head comes off.
I was just as shocked about it too. At first I thought it was an undercard fight to hopkins/tarver. But when I found out it was a separate event with a $40 price tag, I almost fell off my chair! And these fights are at the same time too! WTF!!!!
