I'm getting tired of seeing this made out to be some monumental accomplishment. Even knowledgeable people like Breadman Edwards have fallen for the false narrative.
The fact of the matter is that Sergio was basically a one-legged cripple in the ring that night. He was far from being the elite boxer who had beaten Paul Williams and Kelly Pavlik.
Yes.
As I said Stephen Edwards constantly praises that win for Cotto in his Daily Bread mailbags.
It's baffling to me, coming from someone who usually offers intelligent boxing commentary.
For sure, Breadman's probably my favourite pundit but just now and then he comes out with something that just leaves you wtf?
I honestly hadn't noticed that one but it doesn't really surprise me, same as when he claimed Sergio ducked GGG... much as I was a Golovkin fan it just made zero sense for Maravilla in any timeframe.
Cotto was the pretend middleweight champion. He never fought at 160 like real middleweight champs do. He beat washed up Martinez at a 159 catchweight he demanded. He went on vacation for a year before defended against Geale at a catchweight of 157 when Geale had already been quickly and easily KOed be GGG. Then Cotto defended his title against Canelo at yet another catchweight of 155.
Yeah, I remember that night. Sergio tried hiding a knee brace under his trunks. A bad knee is bad for any combat athlete, much more so for one that depended on mobility like Martinez. What’re ya gonna do? I guess the show had to go on.
i've got a very good memory but that's the only thing i remember from that fight...sergio wearing the longest boxing trunks i've ever seen to hide his knees. :lol1:
Let's play this game:
Cotto was never the same after he injured his right shoulder in car crash.
Cotto was damaged goods after the plaster bout...
Canelo's borderline win over a damaged SMALLER Miguel Cotto is NOT a great accomplishment...
See?
etc etc
You tripping, most thought Cotto was a dead man walking!
Who’d predict that Martinez was basically handicapped coming into the fight?
It was a legendary win just like Pacquiao over Morales, Floyd over Corrales, Hatton over Tszyu, Canelo over Kovalev, SSR over Gonzalez an etc.!
Every fight could have an asterisk over it if we want to be picky!
I like how this guy, nonchalant, tried to slip in Kov-Canelo lol :)
...for the record, Canelo stopping Kovalev still impressed me. 'Shot' or not it was still 2 weight classes up really for Canelo. But calling that win 'legendary'...I mean, ehhhh

So knowing now that Sergio was basically handicapped coming into the fight you still call it a legendary win?
People like to forget this. prefight Cotto had no chance....
Levels...
Sergio looked great against his opposition but technically, Cotto was a better fighter.
Sergio admitted he got caught with a good shot early and never recovered. That supposed bad knee, did not keep sergio from RUNNING across the ring mid rounds when he thought he had Cotto in trouble.
Bottom line, everyone can be a hero fighting B - opposition...The minute they meet the SMALLER A level fighter, none of that B minus glory is a MF factor
And yes, fact: All you haters expected Sergio to win and we he failed, you played the ready-made excuse: "Bad knee!"
You undocumented-haters are already bracing for the Danny Garcia surprise win... "But but Spence hit a tree and was brought back to life bro" "Spence was never the same bro"
:boxing:

For sure... close but I had Murray. There was no way in hell they were gonna let him ruin Sergio's homecoming show though. Damn, I think Martin was even relieved if I recall right... said he doubted he would have left the arena alive if he'd got the nod or somesuch.:lol1:
He should have been given a second knockdown as well. I was gutted for him that night. As you say though, he likely wouldn’t have been safe had he got the decision. :lol1:
After the decision was announced, the Argentinian fans stormed the ring and it collapsed. Gary Buckland was meant to be fighting for the WBC silver belt or something like that after the main event but with no ring the fight was cancelled. I remember he was fuming as the guy he was meant to fight was ranked inside the top 2/3 so he felt it could have earned him a world title shot.
Sergio hadn’t fought in over a year and had multiple knee surgeries during that layoff.
I remember being surprised Cotto took that fight as he was small for 154 much less MW.
A healthy Sergio does a number on Cotto but minutes into that fight it was clear he wasn’t right.
His knee basically gave out completely before he quit on his stool.
Weird considering before the fight people were saying Martinez would destroy Cotto and Cotto was the one that was past it having lost to Trout and only beaten Delvin Rodriguez the past couple years. It was a good win for Cotto, not great. Not his fault Martinez's leg was shot
I just wished people carried this analysis into every fight they evaluate...a fight against a solid pro in his prime and at his best weight is often times a tougher fight than one vs a fading guy with a great name/not at his best weight.
Fandom in boxing has people evaluating things too crazily

Spot on, Roll...
Somebody been claiming it as a good win? Maravilla was done. He was already done against Murray a year earlier. Cotto had no business at 160 either FWIW but it was kinda nice to see Sergio get a fat paycheque for his retirement fund.
Yes.

Everyone thought Cotto was going to be destroyed though.

Exactly like this guy says below. No one knew how injured Sergio was. He could barely move. That knee was ****ed up. Many of the exercises done to heal it, actually hurt it more, that's my opinion. And let's not forget he had surgery before the Murray fight.
Maybe, but it was obvious once the fight got underway that Sergio was a cripple. A few of us were not surprised; the end of his previous fight was not good.
