How much better is Canelo now compare to when he fought Floyd
I think he is the same. Since he fought Floyd he fought Angulo, Lara, kirkland, cotto, khan, liam smith and chavez jr. Only Lara was much of a test and canelo won that fight closely.
I don't know how you can honestly tell if he has improved since the caliber of fighters faced is average or worse (except Lara).
He's the same fighter..the reason he looks like he's improved is because he hasten fought a caliber of fighting since Floyd Still doesn't use footwork, slow on his feet, and gasses. It's like if a great offensive team played the 2000 Ravens, got shut out, and then went on to beat other decent teams. People would be like "Well they improved since the 2000 Ravens...no, they just haven't played a team of similar note since then. Also people noting his stamina improvement.
After Floyd here it is.
Angulo
Lara
James Kirkland
Cotto
Liam Smith
Julio Cesar Chavez
Significantly better. For one, comparing the physique of 22 year old Canelo to now is silly. This version of Canelo would walk through everything that Floyd threw. It wouldn't even register.
Two, he's a much better boxer who has significantly improved his stamina. He used to be known for gassing in the 2nd half of the fight. No more.
And more importantly for their fight, Canelo now has an offensive game. Earlier in his career, all he was was an excellent counter puncher. Now he know how to attack, that was the main reason he lost against Floyd. He had no offensive game at all. Same reason he struggled against Lara. It's hard to bank rounds when you're trying to counter a mobile opponent that barely throws anything.
At 160, Canelo walks through Floyd.
More solid now than he was against Floyd back then. But if they were to face off again the result would be the same. He seems to lack that something special that other great fighters have.
It's hard to say, he hasn't fought anybody with a style that can trouble him since Lara and he was lucky to get the W in that one.
Let's be honest, who did he fight after? Angulo who was a tailor made punching bag at that point just like Chavez Jr, Kirkland who is just sh1t, Ishida beat him in 1 round lol. Domestic level Liam Smith. Cotto was well past prime and dining out on beating a crippled Martinez and lost any meaningful fight in a while but their fight was still competitive. Khan was outboxing him until size and Khan's fragility played a big role.
Anyway, i'm aware that you can pick apart anyones resume if you really want to but he's been matched with fighters that are tailor made for him to look good since Floyd except Lara who arguably won. Khan's style obviously wasn't good for Canelo and Khan showed Canelo still can't deal with movement but Khan just isn't that good and doesn't have the ring IQ to sustain it.
Floyd's style was just all wrong for Canelo and i don't believe this version of Canelo has improved enough to be competitive with Floyd. There was an incredible difference in skill level along with the fighting styles that makes it obvious the outcome would be the same even with this version of Canelo. He would have to be at least 10x the fighter now compared to then, and he isn't.
How much better is Canelo now compare to when he fought Floyd
I think Canelo was drained for that fight. At 160 he should be better but I still don't think he could beat Mayweather at any weight. Floyd too skilled for most. I think a slick boxer with size and power might be too much for Canelo. Oh wait a minute. Isn't that fight coming up? :)
The thing is, he has definitely improved, just not in any way that would increase his chances of beating Floyd. He learned a few things from Floyd and is now older, stronger and more experienced than when he fought him, but that's about it. He's not a new beast that would cut off the ring against Floyd now and actually land his punches in a second go around.
Mayweather had also zapped Canelo in that fight .. Did what he wanted and it would be no different a second time around aside from the older legs of Floyd letting Canelo get a little closer , maybe close enough to pull a horn out of the box "peeleft:
I would change the wording a bit to see if anyone can say what he does better now than before or can do now that he didn't do before. Logic can make us assume he's better for the experience, but in what specific ways, that's a good question that demands a true answer.
In my opinion he has improved a bit .. Tricks here and there.. Canelo has a lot more miles than people think , I know the topic is how much has he improved since Floyd but he had been fighting as a pro for a long time before .. On a side note I see him on a decline just like gennady so this fight is in the air .. Maybe lean towards ggg
Haven't really seen much improvement. Mayweather managed to walk him down at times cause he's always waiting to counter and ends up on the ropes, it's continued to happen in pretty much every fight since. No idea why he wouldn't atleast improve his ability to fight off the backfoot or atleast not be so transparent that he's looking to lay back and wait to counter with his right hand.
Seems better defensively. But i really dont see a huge difference. Maybe sharper all around and more experienced but hes still largely the same fighter he was. Also gotten bigger.
Still would get beat by floyd , floyd beat him because of superior boxing IQ.
He's gotten a higher boxing IQ, but the reason he was beaten so handily then is still relevant now. He's not a better boxer than Floyd. It's really that simple.
We have to see him vs Floyd to know.
The who fought , would beat who fought scenario is one that many fans are fond pf but things don't work that way.
People would take the Khan and Chavez Jr fights to say Canelo is now vastly different, ignoring the closer fights like Lara and Cotto.
Now idk how much Canelo has improved, i'd like to think he has. Who's to say that Canelo would've always beaten Cotto and Lara? What if the Canelo who fought Floyd would've also lost to Lara and Cotto that night? It's hard to gauge, would Canelo go all out like he should've in the first fight? Is Canelo even that type of fighter to go all out in a brawl Maidana style? I think he's still a boxer-first and it would be uncharacteristic of him to take the fight to Floyd.
