I know mayweather did a lot of ducking and cherry picking. his last 20 fights were all totally in his favor before anything even began. but the 147 division just has more talent...even in a weak era like today.
sure he could ko ward which is a great win - but ward hasn't done much lately and it would slink down to just a good win in a few months.
even though floyd has a great record.. i dont think many will even talk about him much in years to come because of how carefully monitored his career was. the biggest risk this dude took was a fight with an aging de la hoya...and who the **** wouldn't take that fight - a fight he almost lost anyways.
dude had a prime Pacquiao sitting in front of him in the same weight class for 3 solid years and he made up a ton of bull**** to not fight the guy until he was struggling with guys like bradley and getting knocked out by Marquez - then he jumps in and squeaks out a mediocre decision at the tail end of his career.
Imagine if SRL vs Durans only fight was the 3rd fight?
Mayweather was always carefully managed like you said but the cherry picking really started once he left Top Rank. There's a video of a prime Margarito approaching Floyd asking to fight him. Mayweather's answer was I'm making smart business decisions which really means chery picking/ducking and going after the biggest pay days instead of fighting other champions in their prime. Broner put Mayweather on blast saying how he told him to go after the biggest reward with the least risk.
After the Ricky Hatton fight he said, "I'm going to retire from the sport; I'm not going to let the sport retire me." His mind was never on being the best. He was shamed into fighting Pacquiao. People really overrate him here.
At the same time I can't really blame Mayweather. A lot of these boxers who fought the best can't even put a sentence together now.
Yeah but if he KO's Andre Ward that would trump anything Mayweather has accomplish. Let's not forget how much cherry picking and ducking Mayweather did. Take off the nostalgia goggles.

GGG can, but it's very unlikely. He lacks the accomplishments @ 34yo that would keep him on track to pass Floyd. He needs to be undisputed at 160lb for a few defenses. Move up and at least unify some belts at 168.
Are you for real? It'll take a hell of a lot more than that.
What I mean't by it was as of GGG now, he won't be able to beat them. But if he did then that would have to be a version of GGG that is ATG worthy. That version would be able to beat Ward and Kovalev. I don't see GGG doing any of that so my stance is a firm no that he will not surpass floyd.
Who is even around to beat that would have GGG surpass Floyd? Ramirez, Degale, Alvarez, Lara, Saunders, Eubank Jr, and Jacobs are realistically the best fights for him that he needs to make. If he beats these guys then yes he would surpass Floyd. Will it happen? No. He isn't getting past Ramirez for one and Alvarez isn't fighting him until Fall 2017 which I am sure GGG will lose. Lara has a chance of beating him but I don't think it will happen. GGG goes through Saunders and Eubank Jr....Jacobs is a 50/50 fight. Jacobs is bigger and has the power/boxing ability to beat GGG. GGG isn't invincible, he isn't going to walk through Jacobs and get to his chin. Look at the Lemieux fight, GGG was cautious in that fight and Lemieux is just a big punch. Nothing else. What brings Jacobs down is his chin. Jacobs got sloppy in the Mora fight and came in completely naked (metaphorically) against Mora when he went to finish him and he paid for it. Jacobs does that against GGG he isn't getting back up.

of course the fight's unlikely to even happen. then he's got to win. i don't think he'd do either.
the ward fight may materialize in time, but you doubt it. kovalev - golovkin's not as big a fight. no amer
we're speculating in this thread. i'm allowed to do that.
the question was whether or not golovkin could get on an ATG list, not whether or not he will.
i agree with you, i just think is way too much on the fantasy land...
lets be realistic, ggg would not fight ward or kova at 175, he wanted ward well drained at 164.... no point on even discussing those fantasy scenarios...

going up two weight classes to beat two pound for pounders would give him two better wins than anything floyd's got. better than anything pacquiao's got, too. those would be two of the best wins in boxing in a long, long time. people dont' even do that any more. i think the fair comparison would be shane mosley moving up to beat oscar de la hoya, and even then we know that oscar and shane are actually pretty close in natural size. shane was a huge lightweight moving up 12 lbs to 147. he fought oscar, a very strong welterweight, but a guy who was a world champion as low as 130 lbs.
golovkin's been a MW for his entire adult life, and would be jumping 15 lbs to fight a guy who was a natural 168 lber until he moved up, and kovalev, a natural LHW. ward and kovalev, like oscar, are top ranked pound for pounders. oscar has a better resume than both, but again, you're talking about jumping two weight classes from your natural weight. LW was not shane's natural weight, and he murdered himself to get there when he was young.
barring something crazy, like ward losing his tune up, or kovalev being "exposed" those would be a better single win than ntyhing on floyd or manny's resume. and there would be two of them.
if a MW can beat those two he's basically a hall of famer. it's a better resume than gatti, mcguigan, ray mancini, just on those two wins alone

Hell no. And there is NOTHING the can do to reach Floyd alltime. He is simply too old and wasted away too many years already fighting bums in a terrible division. Doesn't have a single top notch win and he's 34. He's spent over 2 years begging Welterweights and Super Welterweights to fight him while wasting his prime fighting bums like Monroe and Wade. His next fight is against a Euro prospect. And he's now hoping and praying Canelo will move up to 160 and fight him....A YEAR from now. So best case he won't have a relevant fight until he's 35. If he had a better team around him they would of explained to him that you need to take risks instead of hoping and praying you get fights on your terms at 160.
Had he done what he is asking Canelo to do...move up to 168 or down to 154 to force bigger and better fights 2-3 years ago maybe. But he and his team still don't get it because years later they are still playing it safe calling out fighters above and below who have NEVER fought at 160 pulling a okie doke on his fans when he turns around says pat at 160 and fights guys like Eubank and Wade that will do NOTHING for his career.
A victory over Ward and Kov wouldn't put him in sniffing distance. Those are victories he's not going to get.
