I been arguing this before the fight even went down between Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia that Lamont Peterson is underrated. His performance against Danny Garcia (who I picked to win) was to be expected as competitive as he is not a bum fighter in the least. He has not been given a fair shake in that Matthyse fight at all.
I was not surprise to see Lamont Peterson get the best of Garcia as the fight wane on. He ALWAYS get the best of someone as the fight wanes on. Watch the Jean Dierry fight, watch ANY Peterson fight and he always fight in a mix of boxing to brawling late. It's like he has to warm up by boxing before he is able to square up, have a rhythm to fight on the inside. His timing and his defense in range, riding a fighter's punch with his upper body movement is overlooked.
Matthyse never destroyed Lamont Peterson, the ref stopped the fight as the man stood up at the count of 4. He was more badly hurt when he was first knock down AND got up when his legs and nerves didn't want to work. If that fight would had continued, you would had seen a similar or even crazier result that was witness in the Peterson-Garcia fight. His chin gets better as the fight wears on and breaks down a fighter's rhythm. Matthyse caught a break with a surprise stoppage by Smoger(who surprised me with that stoppage as he is the best ref for a brawl), I figured paid attention to LP's unbalanced feet in the beginning of his fights, where he usually ends up on the canvas, only to get fired up and better as the fight continue. Too bad.
So you guys need to just STOP it with the Danny Garcia is over-rated circle jerk and realize that you DKSAB. You guys over looked Lamont Peterson and thought the guy was a scrub when in actuality that Matthyse fight was a ref made fight. They allowed John Molina Jr. who is a much lesser fighter to continue after he been on the canvas countless times and took longer counts, but stopped Peterson from fighting on in the third round? This is why you guys just don't understand what you just saw. Check my posts I already called an excellent fight weeks ago.
Matthysse-Peterson was a fair stoppage. Any other ref would have stopped it as soon as Peterson tried to eat the canvas in the 2nd kd. He tried to get up then fell side ways face first. Right there another ref would have stopped it. Smoger was being Smoger and gave him a chance only to see him get knocked down again. A ref has to live with a fighter getting brain damaged or dying in the ring as being his fault, not you, you just go in a thread and say rest in peace or get well soon and go on with your day like nothing happened. You won't pay a dime for hopital bills or funerals or surgeries so let the refs do their job, if they see a fighter is unfit to continue then deal with it, cause you know you won't really give a sh*t if anything happens to a fighter in the ring.
I knew he'd put up a good fight and could win if he and his team stuck to a decent game plan. I mean look at the fight he put up against Khan, steroids or no steroids that was a good performance.
Seriously?
He should not get absolutely any respect for using steroids. He got what he deserved in his fight against Garcia, gift or no and that Matthysse KO was beautiful to watch.

Something seriously wrong with that statement

People want to deny the fact that Lamont Peterson is actually champion caliber. The Matthyse fight was stopped early, if the guy stood up and was willing to fight, then he should be able to continue especially going by Lamont Peterson's reputation and proven track record to weather punches better as the fight wanes on. Also Matthyse starts to fades as fight go over the course of rounds, while Peterson gets better. Matthyse hit Lamont Peterson with his best shot, slack jawed and everything and the GUY STOOD UP willing to still bang it with him. Lamont Peterson is susceptible to get knocked down, and to get hit with flush hard shots early in the fight. However, he always become beastly and better as the fight continues. EVERY fight, even the Khan fight, Khan couldn't take the constant pressure. Matthyse would had possibly folded like he did against Judah and Alexander, not being able to get his man out of there who only seems to gain more confidence would had broken him as it did when he fought Garcia. SMOGER stopped a great fight.
Anyway Garcia beat Lamont Peterson based on rounds won. So people need to stfu about Garcia losing or lost. People are now just noticing Lamont Peterson way of fighting and how great his inside fighting is based off their surmounting hatred of Garcia. It's amazing...
When Matthysse beat the sht out of him he was supposed to be a bum, now that Gift stole a fight from him after surviving a beat down from Peterson he's the best boxer ever. Gift needs to prove himself aganst Salka do get back in the game man. :D

Wait say what? Smoger stopped it early? come o man, be serious. :D

I think its a shame where boxing is right now. The skills and fundamentals of the sport is no longer appreciated. The jab is suppose to be the most important punch in boxing, yet rarely gets scored. What you saw on Saturday was a boxing exhibition. You saw physical as well as mental warfare. I will say, I think Lamont should have thrown a few fast combinations to assure him the early rounds and probably thrown more body shots like he has done in the past. But in my mind, he still won the fight hands down.
The politics of the sport keeps fighters like Lamont, Rigo, and Bradley down. This is why Floyd had to transform into "Money" Mayweather and become the "bad guy." This is why you see Bradley banging toe to toe in his more recent fights and going away from his gifts. Somewhere the sweet science lost its science and now is all about blood and guts. 30 years ago, fighters like Peterson would be put on a pedestal. He has great lateral movement, a great jab, excellent body attack, and very underrated defense. He is a problem for any fighter at 140 and maybe 147.
I don't think he's underrated. Nor do I think he's overrated. He's a solid competitor but would never be an all time great, lol.
He gives a good fight and can test a lot of fighters. I just think he doesn't have enough power, nor enough stand out attributes to become a great fighter.
A power puncher will not respect him (Lucas), and a decent boxer can outbox him (Bradley). I put him in gatekeeper status.
It's hard to hate on Lamont as he always gives it his best when fighting... However, it is even harder to be a fan of him because of the TRT debacle.
He needs to implement OST, year-round if he can afford it, to start cleaning up his image.
I'd say it's more to do with his losses and the fact he is a cheat.
Dude played it safe the first 6 rounds or so and it cost him. He is solid, but doesn't do anything great except throw body punches.
