searching far and near for ways that the PBC would **** up. Y'all was down playing this mans deals with SPIKE, NBC, and Friday Night Fights. I'm reading that last nights card set NBC Sports records.
Which promoter out there is doing better than Haymon with boxing today?
That is not an investment by GBP or Top Rank. They didn't buy the time. They take a fee from ESPN or whatever cable outlet and one from whatever casino is putting up money to hose it and basically stay within that budget -- so if they get $100,000 (to usea simple round number) for a Friday Night Fights show, they're going to put on fights that stay within that number and still leave them a profit margin for that show.
That's the safe way to play it, no doubt, and it's good business ... but it's not investing in hopes of growing the audience to make money down the road.
Kathy Duva admitted as much with how she lost her NBCSportsnet deal -- they paid her for shows, she spent as little as possible and put on crap shows so she could keep more of the money. Shortsighted, and it's why Duva doesn't have a TV outlet anymore.
So, no, it's not the same thing at all.
Promoters invest in talent, not airtime. It costs WELL over $100,000 to move a fighter from their pro debut to 18-0. So unless they are a huge local ticket seller, the promoter has made every dime of that "investment" out of his own pocket. And unless you are psychic or have an uncanny knack to predict the future, if you are lucky maybe 1 in 25 of the fighters you develop will ever end up on HBO where you might recoup some of that investment.
Every promoter is out there investing their money in the hopes of finding the next Pacquiao or Mayweather.
Problem is that more often than not they end up with Rod Salka
Almost anywhere in the US you can tune in ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX free of charge. That means PBC cards can be viewed for free. Explain to me why this is bad
How are most people getting their signal?
"were" hating on al haymon.
chall can't speak.
If you are doing a grammar check, you need to take the "on" out of that phrase also.
"A lot of you guys were hating Al Haymon." Innit.
Spike is a CABLE ONLY station, as are CBS Sports and NBC Sports. And BET. They are available over cable for most people if they pick them as part of their package. None of those stations own transmitters or local TV stations. None of them are available OTA or over the air.
IDIOT.
If anyone wants to know what channels they can pick up with a basic antenna, just do a search for "OTA stations in (my city)" in your favourite search engine.

I was watching the fights at this Irish dude's house last night and I was explaining to him the problem with Hymen's structure. He wanted to know about the belts and who Garcia was going to fight and if there was any possibility that Garcia could fight Bradley or Pac.
I was telling him that Hymen could essentially come up with his own belts, pit his own fighters against one another and basically make up his own rules for boxing as long as some basic requirements are met so the boxing commissions would allow his fights to take place. I was saying that he could make up his own weight classes, rules, whatever and none of the main belts would even matter anymore because Hymen would have enough boxers to create his own league. There would be no ranking of his fighters by any of the other international ranking bodies because they would only pay fees to Al Hymen directly or to some board that he controls.
My buddy was like "How would that even be legal?" I just told him it's like anything else, he could just create a new business and cut out the rest of the boxing community. As long as the public knows little about the real sanctioning bodies that exist, they will assume that PBC is all there is boxing. This partially explains why they purposely go out of their way to not mention the other belts and act like the division champs are the only champs around. Like how Wilder is "THE" HW champ of the world as if there were no other HW champs.
You and a casual fan were tuned in. Mission accomplished
Haymon shouldn't be criticised for killing great fights and making mismatches because?
Every single boxing promotor/manager through out history is guilty of this.
Most of the guys kissing Haymon's ass would be losing their shit if Arum was accumulating the same sort of influence.
These idiots seem to have latched onto the belief that Haymon is a saviour, not just another promoter trying to make money from the sport which is how the rest of us see him.
I don't see why he should exclusively get a pass for his bullshit, I'd love to know why people think he should.
I don't care if it's Haymon, Arum, Don King, Duva, or anyone else, watching quality matchups on free TV is a good thing in my book
Wtf does that have to do with network tv and boxing?
You are entirely to stupid to follow where this is going. You say more people are dropping cable. So how are they watching tv?
They referred to championships last night -- "not a title fight because he didn't make weight," or Garcia and Pederson being champs but neither belt being on the line because they were over 140, etc.
Maybe PBC is doing what some people assume -- trying to create a UFC-type model where it is its own league.
Or maybe not. Could be they are just going to award PBC belts to their guys and not do rankings and such, just don't want to give credence to the WBC/IBF/WBA/WBO cartels.
Boxing's biggest problem with the casuals is the multiple championships. Try explaining to someone how this guy is WBA champ and there are three more champions - or really two, because one guy has two of the belts, but the other guy is the 'lineal' champ ... introducing that to the casual audience that PBC is trying to build and trying to make sense of that to them would only make people tune out.
Since when are boxing fans all of a sudden great defenders of the WBA and WBC and IBF and WBO, anyway? HBO has been doing this for years - forget the belts, just make the fights. They have promoted numerous guys as "THE GUY" even if he had to give up his belt by not fighting some mandatory No. 1 contender who everyone knows had no rightful place in the top 20 ... and they made important fights and no one said, "OMG, they just acted like the two best guys in the division are ABOVE the championships instead of sending a bag full of money to Jose Sulaiman ... this is an OUTRAGE!!!!"
I don't see how X-ing the alphabet boys out of the picture is a bad thing. But that's just me.
Don't worry about it. People were complaining just last year that he wasn't matching his fighters against each other. A few weeks ago, the black fighters were being lined up to fight and beat the latino ones.
Peterson just lost to Garcia, right?
Remember the days of the alphabet belts needing to be gotten rid of and having a unified commission replace it with one belt was the talk? Yeah, so do I. That was until Al came about and made these guys pipe dream try to come true. Now look at these lames..... look at what they're crying about now.. lol That's why i just sit here and laugh at them. They try too hard

Channels 2-13 vhf. 14-69 uhf. Depending on where you are you can get a lot of free channels. Do some research. Idiot.
Like already said, more and more people are getting rid of cable every year. I dont have cable.
You said it wasn't free. Well it is. You lose.
Spike isnt network tv dimwit, but chances are if you live in a bigger metropolitan area, you would get it free too.

You're missing the point.
I'm not talking about having a big stable. I'm talking about what it would be like if Arum had his own belts and ranking body. You would immediately recognise it for the corrupt farce it would almost certainly be. But you can't see it with Haymon.
And the thing is, it's nothing to do with Haymon personally. Boxing's shady practices exist because they're profitable. And anyone who's in the sport for profit will inevitably engage in them, not necessarily because they're bad people, but because they're there to make money.

The point isn't about cost. Although network tv is free if you want it like that and HBO is at least 80 bucks when you add up the cable package.
The point is providing boxing access to the masses. Building the sports future.
People don't seem to get it still. Still arguing about semantics. Haymon .etc. Who cares about Haymon. The sport will grow when you quadruple the audience reach. That's all that matters. If boxing wants a significant future then this needs to happen. Haymon knows this. Hes in it for the money bu the knows the more you grow the sport the more money you get. I as a fan will take that. Boxing won't last on obscure networks.
Haymon shouldn't be criticised for killing great fights and making mismatches because?
Go right ahead.
He's been making some fights on PBC that I have been enjoying.
And as for his own ratings and title belts, where can I look those up?
first off who pays $39.99 for HBO?? lol
But regardless, most of us have HBO anyways for other reasons so the boxing is technically "free"..........
No doubt.I'm amped up for the season premier of Game of Thrones coming on tonight as well as Silicon Valley. The boxing is great but it makes up like 20% of what I use HBO for. It costs me $22.00 a month for HBO, Showtime, Starz and Encore.
