Russell annihilated Gonzalez like he was nothing which I was not expecting at all. I was swept up in the hype of the Mares victory and predicted a Gonzalez KO, after having only seen one of his fights.
Russell is elite at featherweight it seems but Gonzalez was overrated a bit, though still a very good win over a dangerous guy on the best run of his career.
But I think the overarching point of the featherweight scene at the minute is that Loma is a special special fighter.
I think we are looking at a Sugar Ray Robinson/Manny Pacquiao/Roy Jones/Pernell Whitaker kind of talent here in Lomachenko.
Gonzalez' chin sucks, he even had a bad chin back in super bantam. It was a matter of time.
The fact that he made it so far with his chin is pretty amazing. He's not overrated at all, Rusell won with superior speed.
I'd love to see a Loma vs Rusell rematch.
The guy with almost 50 KO's got extremely lucky:rofl::rofl:and he's serious too.
These people amaze me. Everybody in boxing is a ****ing bum. Worst fans in all of sports.
It is astounding how certain posters on NSB can so easily dismiss someone's career when they lose to a fighter that poster hates (more to the point, is managed by someone the poster hates)

Jhonny is just old now. He's a 15 year vet with 65 fights. He happened to catch Mares at the perfect moment and hasn't looked great since. He's been kod before. Russell just caught Jhonny at the perfect moment and looked impressive, but he's still not a top talent.
Exactly. Russell should be thanking Haymon for getting him this undeserved title shot.
Looma totally outclassed Russell in every department, he is highly skilled. Russell spent his whole career being hyped and people telling him hes great, spoonfed career, he probably believes his excuses.

Russell is much better than Gonzalez and Loma is better than Russell. I too thought Jhonny would KO Russell. Totally surprised Russell got a ko victory.
Mares worst nightmare. Maybe he and Jhonny can rematch now because I don't think Mares wants any part of Russell.
Gonzalez has been in tough tough fights. You never know which Gonzalez is going to show up.
I don't think he's overrated at all but I expected him to put up a better fight than he did. It looked like his mind wasn't there at all. That or perhaps Gary Russell Jr. is that good. But I didn't think his loss to Loma was that bad, nor do I think much of Loma as of yet.
It could just be a bunch of overrated fighters looking better than they are in all these fights, but I don't think Gonzalez is overrated, he was never over hyped to begin with.
Gonzalez has been over the hill for a very long time. It was a huge upset that he beat Mares. He got extremely lucky and caught Mares with something big early in the fight. Chinny, slow, but can punch.
Fairly easy task for Russel, who is fast, and slick.
Another hand picked Haymon farce. They are just lucky that they managed to keep Gonzalez away from any real threats long enough to gift his title to Gary Russel.

it's a combination of most things imo.
gonzales is a good fighter but he has always depended on that power a whole lot. his boxing skills aren't all that good and neither is his chin, but he is a good fighter.
russell definitely wasn't at his best against lomachenko. his speed wasn't the same, he wasn't sitting down on his punches and had absolutely no stamina whatsoever.
i just assumed he was the bully type who looks great against lesser opposition but shrinks in the face of resistance. but after hearing him explain the situation with his S&C coach going into the lomachenko fight and seeing him dispatch of gonzalez when properly prepared, that's no longer the case. dude had an off night.
finally, lomachenko is the wrong guy to have an off night against. he really is the goods, a tremendous talent. he would beat russell on his best night imo, just not as easily.
still, comparing him to roy jones, whitaker, pacquiao, robinson and mayweather at this point is blasphemous. he hasn't even proved he is the best in his division at this time let alone one of the best ever p4p.
he is a monster talent, but so was judah, jermain taylor, broner, linares etc. all good fighters but all falling way short of their expectations, let's see what lomachenko does before we compare him to legends.
Russell threw 800 punches against Lomachenko. No stamina my ass. And he wasn't sitting on his punches because Loma wouldn't let him.
Loma is good, Russell is good, Mares is good, Jhonny is good and Salido is good. And when good fighters actually face each other, they win some and they lose some.
This era is so obsessed with the 0.
Very well said!!!
At this level it is tomate tamato. Salido makes up the lack of talent in exprience and toughness. That not trying to make the weight move against Loma was pure boss.
How the hell is Gonzalez over rated? The guy is the definition of a consummate professional. Guys with losses in their first 10 fights yet still go on to win multiple World titles. Who over rated Jhonny? If anything don't be surprised he works his way back to a title fight and win it.
it's a combination of most things imo.

It has nothing to do with being overrated. Russell just lost to a better fighter. No shame in that at all.
Pretty much. Same with Russell and Gonzalez.

one of the reasons russell looked horrible against loma is bc he stepped up in talent in a big way. the dude was fighting bums and then decides to fight a guy like lomanchenko lol
still think loma beats him especially after watching those highlights, russell didnt know what to do or how to adjust he just kept throw quick combos
