Well, as you start to make more money, you can afford to fight less.
When you're fairly new to the pro game, you need to stay active to get your name out there.
Unfortunately, I am going to have to agree here. It's just a natural progression of a fighter who is in the sport. Early on, you need to be more active so that you can make yourself known. Once that happens, you will get major attention and hopefully, it will bring you marque matchups and if successful world title shots, and world championships. If you hit it just right, you could become the next cash cow in boxing. At that point, you would be making six, seven, may be eight figure if you are lucky. If you were in that position, you would fight twice a year as opposed to four or five times. Plus, fighters get old and have wear and tear. For most fighters, a 25 year old would be fresher than a 40 year old unless you are B-HOP. I am just saying that age and success makes most fighters want to fight less due to those variables if things turn out for the best.
Kovalev can not be in 3-4 Pascal fights a year, they take a lot out of you. Just like Pascal can't fight a Kovalev type fight 3-4 times a year. Guarantee Kovalev fights one more time this year and call it a year. And I would be surprised if Pascal fights again this year, he would probably fight a soft touch to take it easy on his brain/health.
Like I said before: Tougher fights=longer training camps+longer recovery period after a fight.
Another thing is, you may not have a family yet so you can't relate, but these guys want to spend time with their families you know? 2 fights a year is 4 months away from your family(8 week training camps), another 1-2 fights is another 2-4 months away. 4 fights is four 8 week training camps. On top of that, commissions require a fighter who just been stopped to wait a mandatory amount of months where they can't have another fight. Lastly, GGG is fighting 3-4 times a year because of the level of opposition he's fighting, also GGG doesn't even have any kids, so he has no worries about raising children yet. You think a man with kids has no responsibilities? He should just fight the amount of times you want him to for your entertainment, his family be damned? How about you become a pro and go fight 4 times, implement your bullsh*t obligation on yourself.
ummm i think he has kids ,may be mistaken
As much as I agree, If I was in America I don't think I would like having to dish out the ridiculous amount of money to watch PPVS that often. Thats 4 Canelo PPVS, 4 Floyd PPVS, 4 Pacquiao PPVS. Probably 4 Cotto and maybe Chavez Jr. if he is still on PPV.
IMO an up and coming fighter should be boxing every month. If I trained hard and knocked someone out first round without breaking a sweat. I'd happily box the week or two after. Love how decades ago fighters were boxing so reguarly
They aren't fighting to entertain us. They are doing it to better themselves. Kev also brings up some great points that even 2 fights, mean at least 4 months away from your family and real life. It's a big sacrifice.
Not every fighter leaves their family. For most of these guys who fight twice a year it's about money, it's not always the fighter's choice either, sometimes it's promoters and tv companies.

Actually they say inactivity is a fighter's biggest enemy.
Kovalev will fight 3 times this year, Pascal just gone, Mohammedi in June and then a fight in the Autumn/Fall. I'm disappointed because I wanted him to fight 4 times.
I'm fine with it for guys like Froch who take a lot of punishment in a fight and need the recovery time, but not for guys who don't ship many punches.
It's like Broner said after Molina fight, he barely got hit, he's ready to fight Khan at the end of the month.
The whole twice a year thing is about money really, the money isn't there to pay a lot of these lesser stars to fight 3-4 times per year, they demand a big purse.
Of course but 2 fights a year is enough activity to prevent ring rust.
Believe it or not training camps put a lot of strain on your body and the older you get the harder it is to stay in optimum physical condition and as a result you manage your body better and fight less often.

How is it a stupid rant? Everything I said was true, except the part that GGG has a kid (I don't know his biography). Kovalev won't fight 3 times this year, I guarantee it. That's what happens when you are in tough fights. As for GGG, as long as he stays at 160 he can fight 5 times a year, he's not taking any punishment there.

I'm fine with 2 fights a year for the guys at the top who have proven themselves. I'd like to see more but I get it. The problem I have is the nobodies who have done and proved nothing who fight once or twice a year and expect to be treated like stars.
I think 3 is the perfect amount for even the biggest stars.

fighters should be forced to fight atleast 3 times, a lot of respect for golovkin who will do 4 this year
I totally agree, I believe boxing needs to be better regulated, it's crazy how this sport just drifts along at the behest and whims of the rich and powerful.
I think any fighter who is regarded as "regular" or "super" champ with the 4 main bodies should have to defend his title at least 3 times a year. One mandatory and 2 voluntary.

Pascal wasn't really a tough fight, and Kovalev's training camp was crap for that fight, not hard and grueling. You're making all kinds of shit up. That's why it's a stupid rant.

Yup and also it depends on the quality of their opponents as well
Pac and May sure but guys like Danny Garcia etc are wasting their best years fighting twice a year.
If guys fought more often the wouldn't need such long training camps to get back in shape.
Fight, then do nothing for 4 mths , of course you're going to need 8 weeks to get in shape.
For example, Chris Eubank defended his title 17 times in 3 years during his prime.

Other than taking away titles, nobody can force anyone to fight. The business has changed and you can either accept it, or whine about it as time passes you by.
