In boxing today, if a fighter gets a loss he's considered a bum. And I believe that's why the fighters of this era are scared to fight the best as so called 'boxing fans' start to undermine them even if they stepped up to the plate. Look at the UFC for example, the best fight the best and no one cares how many losses you have. Hall of famers like Chuck Lidell who came with a do or die attitude. We need more guys with Keith Thurman's mentality; not afraid to lose the 0.
See this is the thing with unbeaten records, if you have an unbeaten record great try and keep it be that bad motherfucker no one can beat but once you start ducking and dodging fights to keep it, buying advantages, catchweighting people, you a coward.

Guys I respect (like that means anything but still throwing it out there)
Broner put his 0 on the line
Rios put his 0 on the line
Mares put his 0 on the line
Canelo put his 0 on the line
Rigo put his 0 on the line
Lomo put his 0 on the line
some walked out with their 0's some didnt, I respect them all the same as a fighter.
all I think of atm thinking just recently cause I can run off if we count everyone.
Winning is the main thing, yes.
But at the end of the day, when it is all said and done and we look at the bigger picture, a fighter with a handful of losses can be seen as a greater fighter than an undefeated one.
Ali and Marciano. Who is held in higher regard? Who has an unbeaten record?
Being undefeated and winning every time out is the goal, but it isn't the be all and end all. Unless you are an "Ahh still got mahh Oh" type of fan, which in any case makes you an idiot so whatever...
You cant please boxing fans , when a fighter loses a fight he was exposed but if hes undefeated he hasn't fought anybody good. Fighters just cant win in a lot of fans eyes, maybe that's why most don't really care about fans opinions and now with the internet and social media we have trolls everywhere making fools of themselves saying things behind a screen name that they would never say if their real name was attached to it and making boxing fans look stupid to anybody reading it.
Yup boxing fans can't be pleased I mean look at canelo dude gained nothing from fighting trout mayweather and Lara dude fought the best and only a few people actually gave him props wether you think he won or lost is beside the point he fought the best all before turning 24.. I gurantee you if everybody was behind canelo and giving him props when due other fighters would do the same.. I swear fans are ruining the sport
I think how u feel a fighter is respecting the game rather than winning or losing matter the most to the fans, if a guy doesn't train seriously and have a poor performance ppl will say he's a bum, if he quits in the ring like Ortiz he doesn't have the heart to b respected as a fighter but other fighters like rosado I haven't seen him win a fight yet but I think he has heart and will fight anybody but the $ has to make sense to take the fight but now it's to much strategizing involved but hey if it gets u a tittle shot, hey it works. It's called great management
I know we laugh at Broner alot, especially seeing him get beat up by Maidana. But I will admit that Broner getting his first loss, especially in that manner, could benefit him in the long run. IF he can keep winning from here on and showcase his talent and improve upon it, without the pressure of being "undefeated," he can still have a bright future. But that is a big "IF"
Because boxing is a product of the people that participate in the sport. I find that this younger generation is all about Me! Me! Me! What they can get the most from, with the least possible effort. I don't think there is a single solitary kid that I have spoken to in recent memory that has said or done anything beyond what was in their own best interest. I understand that these guys are putting their long term health on the line, I understand that all the rounds, all the punches are going to take their toll. I know that its hard to get up and train. But damn it all if your at the top of the pyramid then you owe it to the fans that are getting you those millions in your pocket to give the fans what they want. That's what its supposed to mean to be the "CHAMP!"
Boxing is about great fights, not great records.
We don't follow boxing because of records; we follow them because of fights. Fights can go either way. So records are overrated. You can avoid your way to a zero. Or you can make boxing history by fighting the best despite losing every once in a while.
This is what made Oscar a star. Who didn't he fight??
Agree with you completely OP, fighters care more about being undefeated than stepping up and really challenging themselves and it is resulting in less exciting matches for us fans. I don't think losing to a great fighter makes you a bum and anyone who does think that is ignorant.

If you're fighting the best and lose so be it... If you're undefeated fighting TBA and lose the first time you step up then you got exposed.. If you're undefeated and a ducker you're just TBE...
The fact that not losing in boxing is so important isn't the answer, it's the problem.
So the object of the game is not important? It is part of the problem? I think you are in the wrong place~

I agree. I think it's ridiculous that the first fight a boxer loses he gets labeled a "bum" or "overhyped" etc, etc.
That isn't even true, everything in boxing is what have you done for me lately so it can easily be turned around after a loss someone would just need to string wins together.
Not losing is very important in boxing so, I would find unbeaten record to be judged just fine.
