Who cares about this,we all know hes fighting the 13th of September. Make the rematch and put Thurman vs Porter on the under card.
This. Well said.
I don't know who it can be other than Maidana
Maidana, and Maidana are both deserving as well.
Yea you right ..this fight HAS TO SELL. Much like how Showtime kinda forced Goldenboy and Floyd to put together Canelo even though many said he still wasnt ready.
Although Thurman, Porter, Matthyse, Garcia are young ready fighters, they dont have huuuge PPV followings. remember its a business.
I think Maidana rematch is clearly in the lead , since the buzz is there with people thinking he won lol. Khans out due to religion.
So unless, they wait for a Canelo rematch (not deserving), Cotto rematch (if he beats Martinez) , Marquez rematch (not deserving as well), ...it looks like Maidana rematch is the only reasonable/profitable opponent. They def learned their lesson and will throw some Mexican fighters on the undercard though. Maybe Mares. and build up either Thurman or Porter to fight floyd
Showtimes not on the hook for all of the expenses. Corona and other sponsors put up millions to plaster their products all over the events. Also Floyd's contract is for 6 fights not 3. So you can't say if Showtimes going to loose money until his contract is up.
Besides Showtime is a cable network that shows boxing. They are not a boxing network. They put on like what? 12, 15 events over the duration of the year. They don't need boxing to survive. If they loose money on the deal it's a tax write off. Floyd was brought in to raise the profile of Shobox, which he has done. It's on guys like Canelo, Danny, and Thurman to take Shobox to the next level. Floyds 37 and smart business people don't wage their future on 37 yr old boxers. Even if that 37 yr old fighter is Floyd Mayweather.
Yeah, I don't know all the ins and outs of the financials, just getting a sense based off of some obvious numbers that gathered in a spur of the moment calculation. I was thinking about corporate sponsorship and what not but I don't know how all that is structured. But I agree, in the sense of boxing as a segment of Showtime's overall service package being affected. I love the Showtime boxing but I watch Showtime for the shows too, they have a great lineup of premium quality entertainment.
These other guys will need to be carefully guided to the max to have anywhere near the impact that Floyd has had on PPV sales though. I see the prices continuing to rise to compensate for the decrease in gross purchases across the board but that isn't the way to go. I love boxing but even I won't pay $80 for a PPV right now. These execs need to come up with another plan and it's evident in the prevalence of these types of threads attributed to the fact that PPV's are "busts" when they are just under 1million buys. Just because you charge more for something, that doesn't raise the intrinsic value of the purchase.
Gonna be another flop.
Khan is the biggest star of the potential names thrown out, but he's been eliminated because of religious purposes (can't fight in September). So that leaves a Chino rematch, those #s were so bad they'll never release them. Pacquiao's sparring partner, Thurman aka the tomato can assassin. Who else? Danny Garcia?
Even with a new 'most expensive undercard ever', those fights do 800K buys tops. He better call Canelo and beg him to co-feature again.
75% x 900,000 x $74.95 = $50,591,250 (HD)
25% x 900,000 x $64.95 = $14,613,750 (SD)
$65,205,000 total from PPV sales alone (just guessing at the split between HD and SD).
Sounds like a lot at first. $32,000,000 goes to Floyd's guarantee, leaving $33,205,000 for all the remaining fighters' purses and overhead. This does not count any of the cuts of the PPV sales either.
That money goes fast. I obviously don't know what all the other costs are but when it is all said and done, I can see Showtime skimming the bottom of the barrel.

You guys have to think that this fight has to sell.
Onl 2 maybe 3 fights possible would sell..
1) Maidana Rematch, this is by far most likely
2) Cotto at 160 if he wins, less likely
3) Canelo Rematch, Least likely, to probably not at all.
I know Oscar "Golden Boy" De La Hoya doesn't have that much power over at his company these days but he said that if both Saul "Canelo" Alvarez & Miguel Cotto win their respective fights he would like to match them up at the end of the year and have the winner face Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr.

Yeah, I think they did and it made a couple mill too but there has to be a TON of minute factors that suck revenue off the top to put one of these things on. I mean, how much does the commentating crew alone make for the evening? Buffer? The refs? The ring girls? The venue fee? The lodging and travel costs? The doctor fees? The advertising fees? The myriad of other expenses that come with it? All I know is that 32 million to one source is always going to be the major factor for any one of his fights and I surmise that the magic number is somewhere around 1.1 to 1.3 million to make sufficient profits. Remember the Canelo fight did 2.2 or something. This is enough to cover 1 or 2 flops at under 1 mill but after that, you need another big fight, something over 1.2 to stay in the black.
1.2 = good profits...just guessing.
(2.2 + 800 +900)/3 = 1.3MM avg for all three fights. So right now, Floyd is on the break even line...he needs to do at least that on his next fight to not be a bust overall in Showtime's mind I'd imagine.
That's the thing ... No promoter has really detailed the ratios needed to secure an upside event. I'm guessing its because of all the varied elements that change from event to event.
One thing GBP did that was smart was to kill the promotional expenses pre-fight for Maidana\Floyd. So, that alone probably saved then quite a bit on the front end.
Also, the biggest factor in the Showtime\GBP situation is the huge guarantee's Floyd's receiving and how big a debit that's making in the black-line. And since Showtime isn't in the business of losing money, somehow they must be turning a profit -- the questions remains how big a profit. And the same can be said for GBP .... How big of a profit are they making.
I believe both Maidana and Showtime also, capitalized on royalties generated from overseas sales. So, it would be a stretch to think that these guys are losing money.
I don't want to see a Maidana rematch. Yes he did make it competitive but Floyd Mayweather Jr still won that fight decisively in my opinion.
Shawn Porter is coming of two great W's against Devon Alexander & Paulie Malignaggi. A third great win against someone elite would make him the perfect opponent for Floyd in september. I don't think Porter/Brook is happening btw , wasn't today the last day for an agreement to be made?...
Danny Garcia lost steam with his last performance.
Keith Thurman fights bums , he doesn't deserve this fight yet.
Naw man ..... Floyd's numbers are manufactured, everybody around him is losing money left & right. The Barclay's must want to lose some money as well, since they're begging him to fight in NY.
Everybody just want to latch on to Floyd because he's such a money pit.
LMAO...I know right dude is going to be fighting on undercards for ESPN 2 in his next fight since he is losing everybody so much money.
You dudes (some of y'all might be females) whine about everything.
Floyd fights 3 weeks ago: he cheated! He's a fraud! I'm never watching him again!
Floyd says he will return in September: no one cares! Showtime is losing money by the minute!
June,July,August, and September: 200+ pointless threads about Floyd from "non fans" about his clothes and how Ms.Jackson left him, etc etc
:lol1:
Give it a rest.
Just picturing Ellerbe say this boils my skin. That guy is so queer in every way.
Your post is what we like to call "Blind hate". He's Floyd's biggest supporter, what exactly did you expect him to say?
Surprised that's he going through with the September date. Camp will have to start July, which means he will only get about 8 weeks rest. Given the nature of his fight and his age, I would have thought he'd need more time to recover.
Didn't they also, do the closed cable & movie theater thing for this fight???
