I just cant get down with the hype train. One of my friends say they like Kirkland because he's Tyson esque in his aggressive style and attitude.
So is that what it is? Do people think hes like the second coming of Tyson?
Because I dont see that at all. I dont see anything special about him.
I dont think he can beat Martinez, Williams, Lara, Dzizniruk or Cotto.
People see the style and KO% so they like him. People tend to confuse the question. The question isn't how exciting or dangerous he is but how good he is/can be. Is he going to beat the elite? I don't think so.

Yes. It's nothing more than he's an exciting fighter in a very boring period overall. There's just not that many. Decades ago, he wouldn't have made it anywhere with the way he fights....but today, people just want to see some exciting fights no matter what.
hes a KO waiting to happen cuz hes so damn reckless in there. he needs a better trainer than ann wolfe. she trains him like a pitbull.
anybody have any idea who he might be working with? someone like joe goossen could harness that unbridled aggression. hes not that great of a fighter but he does have some tools to work with.
I consider him a great prospect, but not perfect. I also like the fact that the hype has come from his style of fighting and not because he was handpicked to be the next big thing by HBO.
I second that. The way people hype him up you would think that he wouldve finished julio much sooner than he did, but he seemed to fade in the later rounds. Fatigue started to show. As for the second coming of tyson, forget about it, this guy aint it. He's claimed that hes even better than tyson. He may have good power but not the devastating power tyson possessed and nowhere near the speed tyson held even as a 200lb plus fighter.
Somebody just mentioned Lara and I agree I'd love to see that fight, but I don't know if Lara automatically beats him. And I like Saul Alvarez a lot. But he got wobbled by Cotto's little brother, so I don't think he's ready for Kirkland yet. I think Angulo-Kirkland is close to a 50-50 fight if Kirkland can get back to form. I don't know if Martinez beats him really because it seems like his weakness is pressure, but Cotto loses to any version of Kirkland. Too small. I'd probably favor P-Will and Martinez over him, but he'd be a live dog because Martinez's stamina can give out on occasion and Williams isn't a great boxer.
IMO James is a solid fighter, but I believe why people like him is his style..Boxing has changed in away there are not alot of fighters trying to put their opponents away so he is like must see T.V. Cause he always goes balls to the wall..I would love to see him fight Cintron before he takes on some other names in the div..Cotto won't beat Jame and I think James give Pwill hell don't know how that would end but would love to see it..IMO he better stay away from Martinez..I think James is a solid fighter but nothing really special...But he is very exciting..
This thread isnt about how exciting he is.
Heck Alfonso Gomez can be exciting. Im talking about what do people in see in him that makes people think hes a good fighter and the big threat.
Kirkland ain't the most skilled guy out there I'll admit but we need guys like Kirkland and Angulo that are willing to lay it all on the line. Kirkland is exciting b/c most of us watch knowing that either he's gonna get KTFO or he's gonna KTFO of somebody. Thats where the hype is, as far as Oscar and others hyping him up there just trying to build the guy a fan base and get his a HBO date.
That's all it is at this point
I would like to see him in there with either Angulo, clottey,Cintron, chavez jr and if he can beat one of those guys I'll say its more than hype and he has potential.
I'd favor him over Angulo, Vanes, Lara and Cotto(The size difference and style is too much)
He gets beat by PW and Sergio.
Hes like a bigger Katsidis.
He can beat any B fighter but can't handle the elite.
And right now at 154 there are only two elite.
Last time the US had the second coming of Tyson, he was knocked around the ring for 12 rounds by Calzaghe.
Kirkland is most definitely a beatable man, but he has an entertaining style, so i'm happy watching him. Is he a Lacy waiting to happen? Who knows. For now, i'll just enjoy him working his way to the top.
As I was posting, I was thinking the same thing. People expecting Tyson parte dos and all goes as expected until a boxer comes along and puts him to shame. I was loving that Lacy fight, everyone at my house was thinking and expected a Lacy KO and I said the Zagster would beat him.........beat him he certainly did.......very badly, lol
Let's see how Kirkland responds to the layoff and jail time but he isn't a especially fast or skillful boxer. He was however a very strong fighter with world class power. Which usually meant for entertaining fights.
His exciting style and relentlessness is admirable..his controversy out of the ring and being trained by that so called woman brings in more attention as well..
Highly skilled?..NO!
His hype train is running cuz of his style..not skill..he's pretty Tyson-ezque if you ask me..
And his nickname Mandingo Warrior helps bring the b!tches in!!..lol

LOL come on man Gomez can't punch thru a wet paper bag. I just said he carries dynamites in those hands and is super agrressive. Yes he is very vulnerable but with that kind of power, toughness and agreessiveness he is a force to be wreckoned with.
I just hope the prison time didn't affect him that much. Here is a clip to remind u how agrressive/mean this motha****a is. He is literally chasing joel julio in the 1st round and julio is a big puncher himself.

Jeff Lacy is an interesting comparison.
easily one of the most exciting fighters today. packs a mean punch and is super agrressive. But you prefer the malignaggis nad dirrell's so i understand.
