In the last two weeks, I saw the top four boxers in the light heavyweight division battle. The No. 5-ranked boxer is ready for any of those guys who wants a piece of him.
Bernard Hopkins is trying to reach the top of the division against the boxers almost half his age. The "executioner" isn't impressed with Tavoris Cloud, who beat an aging Glen Johnson recently. "I'm the new Hopkins. I'm taking over this division," Cloud said in the post-fight press conference.
That's a bold statement to make for a fighter with only 21 wins into his career.
"That's pretty confident, but there's only one executioner, and that's me," Hopkins said in the studio of ESPN's Friday Night Fights.
If anybody knew why they called him that nickname, the evidence left in the ring said it all. There was a stretch of his 20 straight wins with 15 knockouts, including 11 in the first round. Hopkins once stopped a fighter in 24 seconds. He also defended his IBF title 12 times without a loss and knocked out Johnson in the process.
The "executioner" was Fighter of the Year nine years ago with signature wins over Roy Jones Jr. the last two times and Oscar De La Hoya. He whooped Felix Trinidad so bad that his own daddy came in the ring to drag his son out.
Winky Wright and Kelly Pavlik saw defeat up front against Hopkins. And at the age of 41, Hopkins beat the younger, highly proclaimed Antonio Tarver.
So it gives Hopkins plenty of reasons of beating one of the young whippersnappers. Right now, he's not in training, but he's scoping out the competition.
"I'm just waiting for these guys to settle for who deserves to fight Bernard Hopkins," he said.

I think B-Hop is going to be one of those tragic fighters that carry on and carry on. B-Hop was late in the game and thats probably the only reason that he's remained competitive beyond 40 but while his health is still with him he should retire.
I don't doubt he could have 1 last fight(or maybe a good 3-4 rounds) in him but whats the point really. He's got nothing to prove. I personally can't stand him but the general concensus is he's secured a very good legacy and anything he does now ain't going to add to it...... Even his most avid fans would agree after the Jones fight.
I do think he would be pushing it this time, Pavlik might have been the last great fight for him. But everytime you tell this man he is old he comes back and whoops the ass of some young kid
Go away, Bernard. You're one of the greats but Roy aint the only one who needs to disappear after that miserable performance.
Thiiiiiiisss!!!!! :beerchug:
there is no gameplan to beat Pascal. Froch fought a less experienced Pascal. Pascal is top 5 p4p. if not 3
If b-hop of the pavlik fight showed up, pascal will lose. Yes he's fast, but he doesn't have enough stamina to beat hopkins.
How so. An easy wide UD win for Hopkins, ina fight where he was lowblowed and rabbit punched blatantly.
LOL. I'll pass on this. Anyway, that fight was hella embarrassing.
No, he gets owned by a bunch of top LHW and SMW and even some MW; Dawson, Pascal, Froch, Abraham, Ward, Kessler, Diaconnu, Martinez, Pirog, Williams, Bute, etc. I can't even name them all.
Pavlik is a one-dimensional guy with a lot of power but he fought Popkins sick that night.
what beats old man hopkins is a fighter throwing a lot of punches. cloud throws too many punches a round. pascal has a low workrate and runs out of gass.......pascal has much better power then hopkins but we all know hopkins knows how to deal with power (hopkins would have a good chance in that one) dawson b hop. i would slightly favor dawson.
easier said than done against a guy like b-hop. Pavlik tried to win on activity like calzaghe, but couldn't. Props to calzaghe for managing to do so
Don't count the guy out yet, i reckon he's got one more good career-ruining performance in him :boxing:
wouldn't be surprised if he's around at age 50
It doesn't look like he's fighting this year, he turns 46 in January and looked like he's starting to slip significantly in the Jones' fight. But I've learned not to write him off, he might still have one or two good fights left in him.
He wouldn't beat Dawson or Pascal, but he might stand a chance against Cloud if Cloud tried to fight like he did against Glen Johnson.
Hopkins isn't dominating any division ever again. That RJ fight showed that.
That fight was so embarrassing.

Hopkins dominated that fight, won with ease and threw more than he has thrown in years in it. It was a flawless performance, I don't know what you are talking about. A textbook Hopkins schooling.
I'm talking about an average middleweight contender who moved up 2 divisions(as usual) and was able at least to win 2 or 3 rounds and make the distance which isn't impressive at all.
Pascal,Dawson are differents cats.
I'm talking about that.
And I'm not talking about the Roy fight.
Hopkins should go after Pascal, very winnable fight too.
Not sure street.
I can see Hopkins vs Pascal turning worst than Hopkins vs Taylor cuz of Pascal's speed and Nard's age.
Pascal ain't no Pavlik who was a walking mummy,he will move his head, use his legs and throw very fast punches.
Cloud is a walking punching bag,he's fast, but not as Pascal, and has a **** defense while Pascal's defense is decent.
Cloud is to me the easier fight.
