2 Words.................. Bob Arum Yeah I think this one really had a lot to do with it. People might deny it but Bob Arum is a great promoter. Greedy may be, but a great promoter.

He brought women into the sport of boxing, because of his looks and his touching story with the olympics. He was able to crossover to the mainstream drawing in new viewers to the sport maily because he was clean cut, well spoken and had the good guy image (although it was a pretty fake image but most people really didn't look into it or really seemed to care about his misdeeds) On top of that he had the hardcore fans with him because he was always in big fights, even if he didn't win a lot of them or won some in controversial fashion. He was also mexican american so he had that loyal fan base, although strangely I never really met a mexican american that liked him atleast until the Tito fight but I still think they tuned in to watch his fights (he did win a latin grammy afterall lol).

What exactly was his appeal??? when did you start watching boxing? became a fan? it could'nt of been very long if you're asking this. he was the real deal in the ring and out. i guess to fully understand his greatness you had to of been around the sport from his beginning. he blew the doors open and kept going.

He had everything you need. Amateur pedigree capped off with a Gold medal. Fought for America, but had the Mexican-American appeal. He had the story that you could market, with his mother passing, his demanding father and he knew both major languages. He was a decent looking guy, so he brought in the girls. He had a clean image, regardless of the shit he did behind closed doors. And most importantly..... he could fight his ass off. He came in at the right time, too. The older guys were getting just about that time that SOMEONE has to take them out. And he did. He had so much going for him, that fans that didn't even buy into it, watched just to hate and see if he'd fail. He rarely did in his prime and when he did, he came back.

His fights are always bigtime events. His gold medal, looks and clean cut image garnered him support. But as to why he was SO big? Its kind of an anomoly. I mean he is a pretty boring guy in terms of personality, but he did fight all the bigtime fighters.
