Juan Manuel Marquez.
Professional record: 50wins 4losses 1 draw (37KOs)
Best wins of his career undoubtedly his last 2 wins. KO victories over Joel Cassamayor and Juan Diaz.
Arguably never really lost a fight. (But you could also argue he lost a few fights he didnt)
Signature Rival: Manny Pacquiao
Other notable victories: Marco Antonio Barrera, Derrick Gainer, Manuel Medina, Robbie Peden
How would you rate Marquez's resume compared to other active fighters today.
Would you say he is Hall of Fame Lock?
I wouldnt say that the Barrera that fought Marquez was washed up. But i will say I think Barrera won that fight.
And Hatton is not an A class fighter but was there any doubt whatsoever that Hatton was not the very absolute best in the division in which Pacquiao fought him? The guy had been dominating that division for 4 years. With noone ever really coming close to beating him.
yea i know barrera was not washed up when jmm or pac fought him. i think barrera isnt even washed up right now, hes past his prime. yea hatton was a solid fighter, but he should have never gotten the hype he received. trainhard said barrera was old and washed up when barrera is actually younger than jmm, and he wasnt washed up. both barrera and jmm were past their prime when they met. he says casamayor was old, im guessing marquez was 25? casa is 2 years olden than jmm. he said jdiaz had been beat by campbell, the fighters pac gets most credit for had already been beaten. there are things that can be said about everyones resume, including marquez's. marquez could have fought a prime barrera, prime casamayor, the list goes on. the same with any fighter that ever lived. look at the 2 best fighters in the world today, floyd and pac, their resumes are questioned every day. so are the top ten atg's.
yea pacs resume is bettter than jmm's. im not fuking delusional dude. but you just tried to down grade jmm's accomplishments. give the guy a break dude no one is saying that hes an ATG mega star. the guy just gave us a great fight on free hbo. the reason why pac gets questioned is because of the hype that surrounds him. thats going to happen when a fighter reaches his level. truth is, no ones resume is perfect, not even marquezs, but like i said give the guy a break because no ones is claiming that he is the second coming of ali.
you said that barrera was a washed up old fighter when jmm beat him but yet you gave pac credit for it by. whats up with that?
Come on
3x Morales
2x Barrerra
1x DLH (Ones Sided Beatdown)
1x Hatton (2nd Round TKO)
you said that casamayor was old and washed up. what was de la hoya? de la hoya is a year younger than casamayor and steve forbes touched him up damn well a fight before.
can you say hatton is an A class fighter
you cant honestly say the morales that pac fought was a good version? if you give credit to pac for those 2 rematches, i dont see how you cant give marquez credit for the barrera and casamayor win, they were better versions than morales. on the edges of pacs wins over morales, zahir raheem holds a win over morales on one end, david diaz holds a win on the other.

You must not know much about the hall of fame do you. Nor do you know very much about marquez except what you googled.
Marquez was on the short end of the stick, by stick i mean the one that basically ended with guys like Morales, Barrera and other traditional mexican greats who basically got all of the attention he didint get because Marquez was exclusively a counterpuncher who sat back and waited during fights. When marquez had to settle for fights against guys like victor polo and such, nobody cared much about him, he was always respected, but he didint get handed oppurtunities mostlybecause of his style.
Marquez was a hall of fame lock probably the moment he went to war with barrera and really showed and proved that he wanted to have a more fan friendly fighting style. He also fought RockY Jaurez in this exact same way. Marquez really didint change it up until he fought Jimrex Jaca, it was then, along with the decline overall of the mexican stars near his division, that more people began paying attention to him. But those following the sport have always known who he is. Most people thought his brother was the superior fighter, but in recent years, its definately been marquez.
The hall of fame features guys who aint even close to marquez, yet they get in anyway. I like how you say "first ballot" like this is Canton, its easy to get in the boxing hall of fame because of the terrible voting system
I will concede i dont know much about the voting system of the boxing hall of fame but it is fact that Marquez was largely inactive during his late 20s which should have been his prime which kept him fresh and able to fight at this level at the age he is in right now.
He was largely inactive partly because of bad management and partly because noone wanted to fight him. Too high risk too low reward. After the draw with Pacquiao he was offered an erik morales fight which Nacho declined. He was offered an immediate Pacquiao rematch which Nacho also declined. He was relegated to fighting Chris John in indonesea for a ridiculously low pay day to lose a decision. A decision which to this day that neither Marquez himself or his team claim as an outright robbery as with the Pacquiao rematch.
Marquez's career was in limbo after the John loss because not only did he not have a fan friendly style....but he no longer had the hardware for fighters to shoot for so noone wanted to fight him.
Jimrex Jaca or not...even with his dedication and the will to reinvent his style...he was still too high risk low reward for anyone of significance for any elite fighters to wanna fight.
Juan Manuel Marquez owes his career revival to the contractual rights lawsuit between Top Rank and Golden Boy which kept the Paquiao-Barrera rematch from happening. Had Pacquiao-Barrera been for the WBC belt....the Pac-Marquez rematch may very well have never happened and while i think he would still be on the p4p list Marquez may be thrown on the back burner promotionwise and relegated to fighting and dominating the likes of Humberto Soto, Jorge Barrios and Edwin Valero. A far cry from the superstar that he is today.
Delahoya was supposedly the bigger and more expereince guy prefight. The odds were against Pac as with the odds being against Marquez. Pac beat him into submission regardless what excuse you want to give DLH.
Hatton was the champ and have never been beat at 140. Pac KOed like a spar mate.
Pac pummeled MAB in 03 and captured a UD in 07. Marquez beat MAB after EM and Pac took the best out of him, but MAB was in that fight Marquez.
Pac fought EM 3x (Marquez none) Pummeled him twice.
Sure Marquez would still be carving his name for himself, I dont doubt that at all, but resumes speak for themselves and the bottom line is Pac resumes is far more better then Marquezs
Come on
3x Morales
2x Barrerra
1x DLH (Ones Sided Beatdown)
1x Hatton (2nd Round TKO)
There no argument about that unless your just a Pac hater.

i know you are not dumb, ive seen you write well, so as of today, knowing that marquez would still be show casing his skills on hbo, and his resume being the same but with out pac, who would you have above marquez on the p4p list at #2? back on 07, when marquez didnt even have the second pac fight, casamayor, or diaz, floyd mayweather said that marquez was right behind him in the p4p list.
Seriously, for sure Marquez is on the list even without the second fight with Pac, I believe he carves his own way to the top even if him and Pac never meet again. I aint saying he isnt but that close fight with Pac is why he is even a number 2 P4P fighter today.
Thanks for acknowledging my grammer though. 3 years of English Composition and College writing helps out alot.
A lock for the Hall first ballot, but his resume isn't as good as it would be witha an official W over an ATG (we all know he beat one though) or a couple more Hall of Famers.
As far as official wins on his resume, he's adding as he goes on, they probably go like this:
1. J. Diaz
2. Casamayor
3. Barrera

If this was pre Floyd retirement back in 07'
P4P before Floyds retirement and if Marquez never fought Pac the second time.
1. Floyd
2. Pacquiao
3. Hopkins
Floyd had Pac behind him in a interview when ask who's number 2. Right from the horses mouth himself. This was pre retirement.
mayweather has always liked pac, just comparisons to himself and pac are obviously what he doesnt like, as no real competitor would in the first place. Floyd just says it outloud. Just see Pac/Morales II. Its clear floyd respects him.

marquez does get recognition from his pac fights, but doesent pac get recognition from them as well? yea pac would still be a mega star after his win over de la hoya even with out marquez on his resume good for him. but dude no one is saying that marquez would be a fuking mega star with out pac. i dont know why you are trying to say that marquez would be an unknow with out pac. im sure Golden Boy Promotions would be having him fight on espn for his next fight right?
Other then that all the other big names where either old or "C" fighters.
dont tell me that you think the morales rematches, the barrera rematch, and the de la hoya he fought were all against good versions? dont tell me that you think hatton was an A class fighter?

I think he has a good resume as well. And i think he should be in the HOF. I just dont think he will be a 1st ballot HOF'er unless he pulls miracles out of his hat in his next couple of fights.
And the fact that he can fight at the elite level at this age is a bit deceiving because he was largely inactive in his late 20s which kept him fresh.

I think Marquez would still be on the Top 10 if he never fought Pacquiao no doubt about that but I dont think he would be #2 if he never fought Pacquiao. Pacquiao makes Marquez look good and vice versa. i know you are not dumb, ive seen you write well, so as of today, knowing that marquez would still be show casing his skills on hbo, and his resume being the same but with out pac, who would you have above marquez on the p4p list at #2? back on 07, when marquez didnt even have the second pac fight, casamayor, or diaz, floyd mayweather said that marquez was right behind him in the p4p list.

lol. your telling me that no body would notice his skills if he hadnt fought manny? wins over barrera, juarez, casamayor, and a candidate for fight of the year with juan diaz would not get him in the top ten huh? no one would have been aware of his amazing tactical skills, his counter punching, his warrior heart if it wasnt for manny? ivan calderon is on the p4p list and nobody even knows him, yet alone people he has beat, paul williams is on the list, chad dawson is on the list, rafel marquez and israel vasquez were on the list, but juan manuel marquez would not be on it huh?
I think Marquez would still be on the Top 10 if he never fought Pacquiao no doubt about that but I dont think he would be #2 if he never fought Pacquiao. Pacquiao makes Marquez look good and vice versa.
Like I said before...the best thing on Marquez' resume is a loss and a Draw to Manny. And for that, there's no way he should be above Manny in P4P rankings. Its crazy when I hear people say JMM should be #1 P4P, doesnt make sense at all. In all likely hood, take those fights away from Marquez, he wouldnt be top 10. Manny without it would still be P4P.

@TS
I think that second to Pac, he has a really good resume, especially considering his age.

His KO of Casamayor can't be considered impressive. Casamayor should have lost his belt to Jose Armando Santa Cruz. It was a clear robbery! HBO had it at 118-109 for Santa Cruz. Spectators booed him when his hands were raised. All the announcers were unanimously disgusted with the result and one even said that that was not the first time Casamayor got a gift from the judges. If you reacall, it was the same Santa Cruz that David Diaz knocked out!
