The man really is. This isn't a thread to make Floyd Mayweather look better, this is a thread to give Baldomir credit.
I'm not saying Baldomir is the best fighter ever, he's not really great either. However, people shit on him all the time. He is pretty much done and has been since losing to Vernon Forrest, but he is underrated.
People act like the Zab Judah fight was a fluke. He had a very determined gameplan when he kept going forward and kept landing his right hand that kept pummeling Zab.
Not only that, but the man was an UNDERDOG when facing Arturo Gatti! He not only proved the critics wrong, but he KOd Arturo Gatti "WITH A LEFT HOOK THAT ABSOLUETLY RUINS HIM"
He also had since 1999 not lost a fight. I'm not saying that Carlos Baldomir was an amazing fighter, but people act like he was a complete bum. Since 1999 he had beaten some decent prospects and even Joshua Clottey (I'm well aware that he was losing when Clottey got DQed thank you)
He's not amazing, but through hard work he became welterweight champion of the world. Respect that.
Baldomir fought no less than 4 times in Denmark and compiled an excellent record over here with 2 wins 1 draw and 1 loss. This is an excellent record since he was brought in as the fall guy against danish stars or prospects.
He's first fight over here was a decision loss to the superb technician Soren Sondergaard for some useless alphabet title. Sondergaard wasn't used to lose rounds at all and was a world class fighter back then. Tata won a couple rounds in that fight.
Next year (1999) he was brought in to test the undefeated Frank Olsen (son of Kessler's trainer Richard) and handed him his first loss in 31 fights. Olsen was highly regarded at the time at was hyped as being the next danish star. I remember a dejected Olsen after the fight said that Baldomir might not posses crunching KO power, but his punches were very heavy and that he could really feel those body shots.
Olsen was stopped in 10.
Then in 2001 he was brought in to test Hasan Al, a distinguished amateur, and got a draw in a fight he probably would have won had the fight not been in Denmark. A couple of months later there was a rematch which Baldomir won with the final scores of 114-113, 116-113 and 117-111. The first judge was off. That fight was not close. This fight was also Hasan Al's first loss.
I figured that Baldomir was better than just your ordinary journeyman and with some luck and good management he could make a splash.
If anything his record in Denmark is excellent! Taking the precious '0' away from the hometown favorite is definetely an acheivement. Doing it twice is ecxellent.
He's underrated because he KO'ed a shot, welterweight Gatti?
Got it.
No he's underrated due to the fact he gets next to no credit for his wins, even the Judah win, which is by far a lot better then some boxers have done. The dude was Welterweight champ and had worked his way up the hard way. Maybe if you'd read the actual post and instead of nitpicking the part about Gatti. Gatti was pretty much done, but Gatti was the favorite. That deserves a little respect when you win as the underdog.
Exactly. He got lucky to beat an overconfident and underprepared Judah and a washed up Gatti. He deserves credit for taking advantage of those opportunities, but it doesn't make him anything more than he was - a regional journeyman with limited skills.
He got lucky? Have you seen the fight? It was the gameplan of Baldomir.
If people keep pressuring Zab Judah after 3-4 rounds, he starts to crack. Zab is also very open for the right hand. Baldomir took advantage of both.

What puzzles me if that people thought he was a big puncher who would be risky for Mayweather. The problem is Baldomor only had like 13 kos in 40 wins or so

I agree, he is like the clean Margarito. Much respect to Baldo, good tough fighter.
The Gatti win wasn't much I thought. Gatti was f*cked by then.
He was the underdog for Gatti at about +180. That's almost 2-1. Gatti maybe have been shot, but Baldomir deserves respect for overcoming the odds.
lol underrated.
The guy is the Cinderella of this era.
Won one fight in which he was expected to be a pushover, and somehow hes underrated?
Except he had build his rank over a period of time by beating prospects and then working his way to the mandatory position. Yes he was supposed to be a pushover, but he wasn't. People act like he was a total bum, but he was ranked in the top 10 (at 10) according to The Ring prior to the Judah win.
Respect for Baldomir. I'm not going to argue whether Baldomir won or Judah lost (because there's a difference between the two). I will say Carlos made his country proud, made good money and can say he is a former Lineal World Welterweight Champion.
Not a great fighter, but a good one. From 1-10, he's a 7.
I think it had to be more because Baldomir won it. He broke Judah down with the right hand after Judah had won some of the early rounds. Judah folds under pressure if people are still pressuring him after 4 rounds. He's also a bitch for the right hand.
to say he is underrated is to overrate him. He was a jorneyman who came from nowhere and went back there again. Not bashing him or anything but he will never be champion again, actually we will never see him on a descent event
He did not come from nowhere. He had built his status over a period of time and had an undefeated streak lasting 8 years. The fact that we won't see him anywhere again (which actually he became very close to becoming the WBC mandatory when he lost a very close decision in Belgium to Jackson Bonsu, a belgium fighter) is due to the fact he's 37. He's an old fighter who has been through a lot of fights. I'm talking about the 2006 version. That Baldomir is underrated.
I said this the other day. Baldomir landed his right hand over and over on both Gatti and Judah and he did not do that by fluke, he had a game plan and he stuck to it. There will be some ignorant folk that say nah, he is just a bum, but that is because they dont understand or appreciate what they are watching.
Even when he did lose to Forrest,Floyd, they both ended up nearly running away from his rather than Boxing him.
I agree with most of this, but I think Forrest and Floyd badly outboxed him and didn't run away from him.

Mate, he wasn't just losing, he was getting completely owned. Those bastards screwed Clottey over! He wasn't able to get another title shot for nearly a decade! Sons of bitches!:argue:
Anyway, cool thread. Although I'm not really sure whether he is underrated or not. He is just a decent kind of champ that beat some talented, albeit infantile, other champ who was meant to whoop him. The Gatti win wasn't much I thought. Gatti was f*cked by then.
It's because of his non existent defense that let him win rounds. At the time though, Miki Rodruiguez was actually regarded as a decent prospect.
You are right that he would lose a lot of the the time, but I think he would have gave the lower half a run for their money. Hell he was able to win 3-4 rounds off of Clottey.
oh, I dont think he would get dominated in all those fights. the guy had a rock hard chin and lots of willpower.
but I also dont see him winning against Quintana. Quintana would probebly have beaten him 117-111ish, based off the Quintana that schooled Joel Julio.
hes ok, and he won a world championship, not everyone can say that. and I dont think the Judah win was because Judah screwed up himself, I think he won it with his own determination.
but lets face it...if you put him up against a top ten guy in the current Welterweight division(or almost any Welterweight division really), chances are hes going to lose a lot of the time.
people forget this, but he had a decently close fight against Miguel Rodriguez...the judges all had it around 8 rounds to 4. this is the same guy that Berto dominated and knocked out with that right to the body right uppercut combo.

He is not underratted at all,his skills are limited, but he did beat Jab,in probably the biggest upset this decade, major props for that, but u can't call him elite at 147,no way no how, look at the talent at 147,this decade!!It has kept boxing alive because of its dept, almost single handidly!!
It was Baldomir's gameplan that caused him to win the fight. Not because Zab was distracted. If Zab was more active, he might have won, but he kept getting hit with the right hand. Hence why Zab didn't th
The win over Zab Judah is a legit win.
I think Quintana vs the 2006 version would be a close fight. I could see Quintana winning it, but he'd be game.
Zab got destroyed for sure
