I was just watching cotto -v- margarito and if they ever fight again i cant see one way in which cotto can win.
First of all he hit tony flush tons of times with the best shots he has and it just made tony smile, I know people say you can box but in a fight you the idea is to hurt the opponent and if you cant hurt tony he's gona keep walking forward all night long.
Also cotto tried out boxing him and basically didnt have enough gas to keep the pressure off for 12 rounds.
Most importantly is cotto's mind frame, he took a beating in the second half of the fight and when he steps back in there and hits tony again with no effect will he break mentally in just a few short rounds???
The only way i can see cotto winning is that somehow tony has got real old over night and he cant keep going for twelve rounds and that tonys punch resistance just disapears like lacys did after the calzaghe fight.
So apart from the very low odd's of that happening i think cotto only has to chance slim and none and slim just left the building.
thanks.:boxing:
Margarito is too big for Cotto. Anyone with half a brain could plainly see AT LEAST a weight division between them on fight night.
Short of pulling a tactical miracle out of the bag I can't see Cotto ever beating him.
He could and he could do it EASILY. Cotto just loaded up on everything hoping to hurt Margarito. He threw and landed everything including the kitchen sink, but he was fighting thinking he could at least hurt Marg. He couldnt. He just needs to do enough to win rounds and not load up so much going for the knockout. He will save energy down the stretch and could be winning the early rounds without having to stand in the pocket to throw, thus reducing the damage he took in the first fight. THen you have a fresh Cotto who won almost every round going into the last half in much better shape then last time. He can win and I expect him to. He just fought the wrong fight last time. I predict Cotto by UD in a fairly one sided fight.

I think it could be possible, if Cotto can run for 12 rounds.
I had cotto ahead by 1 round in that fight.
However, Cotto is a bit fragile.
He can as long as he is able to sustain his consistency in the early rounds. Similar to how he was doing it in the 1st half of the fighr. Though that's easier said then done. He'll have to overcome Margarito's offensive style and also find a way to Margarito's body because it's very hard to go for Margarito's head. It's practically made of steel.
When Cotto went to the hospital, he was treated for cuts. Not a broken nose.
I don't get how people are saying Cotto needs to go to the body. Hope they realize going to the body takes commitment and if Cotto does that, he's going to have to bang with Marg, which is a big no no.
I agree, dint ppl hear that it was impossible for Cotto to go to Marg's body? When he would try to go down there, he get swarmed by Marg's headhunting...simple as that...:boxing:
Ps: I do think Cotto does have a chance at winning a rematch, but he needs to work strong and be smart come fight night
all the damage cause by tony was done cotto leaning on the ropes (same thing it happen against ricardo torres)
margarito is very predictable, instead of cotto leaning he should clinch more.
Clinch more? Why would he clinch and lean with the bigger man? He'd get out muscled.
Cotto CAN beat tony.
he definately has the talent and the skill to do so...
the major things he needs to change from the first fight are:
A) Work on and IMPROVE his stamina/endurance - a big part of the reason why he lost was he faded out...he got tired and margarito didnt...thats why margarito was able to catch him and have his way with him down the stretch. For the first 6-7 rounds cotto's stamina and endurance was working for him and he got the best of tony in those rounds.
B) STAY OFF THE ROPES - Any fight on the ropes is tony's bread and butter...if you cant find anywhere to go he's going to stand infront of you and take your best to give his and 9 times out of 10 he'll win that...especially with his chin...
C) DONT FOCUS ON KNOCKING HIM OUT - i noticed as cotto's endurance/stamina began to peak he was looking for the knockout to end the fight...he was swinging for homeruns and tony took cotto's best/hardest shots completely clean and kept coming forward...lets face it...chances of margarito getting knocked out by a head shot is going to be VERY rare to not possible...
D) WORK THE BODY - This is something I wanted to see a lot more from cotto in the first fight...a good chin doesnt measure up to the ability to take body punches...in my opinion its one of if not THEE most vunerable targets on a fighter...body shots HURT, ruin your stamina/endurance, cause you to drop your hands, and you can get knocked out if a body shot is placed correctly to the kidneys or liver.
If cotto can work the body early and often he has a very good chance of slowing tony down the stretch to wear cotto's stamina wouldnt be as big of a factor...but he HAS to focus on the body from the first round...
if cotto can make it to the final bell he can win on points...
very nice post. A couple comments. Just keeping it simple Cotto must stay off the ropes, he will have to clinch, he will have to stop his terrible habit of bending forward in the shell defense or he will get wrecked by Margarito's uppercuts and he will have to commit to the body even at the risk of straying low. One other key will be when Cotto chooses to box he must change directions, make Margarito turn circles stay off the ropes and if your gonna move and box do it unabashadly if you get booed than your doing it right at least you are controlling the distance in that sense.
If Cotto goes into this fight looking to win the battle by standing and fighting he will be facing a very brutal uphill battle.

he doesn't really have to do much.
problem with guys like cotto is they are so skilled and so dominant that they are not used to doing some basic things.
.
yeah, that or they haven't fought enough great competition.
If Cotto fought on the backfoot and paced himself he might be able to steal a UD, only problem is I see Tony cranking up his workate even more al la Cintron.

yeah if he tightens up his defense he won't get hit as much but that's no guarantee for victory
