Bear with me, but - does Juan Manuel Marquez remind anyone else of Joe Louis
I mean - he's not exactly the same type of fighter, but there are some interesting parallels I think.
Joe carried a dagner zone with him. It was more than just punching distance, it was wider than that, but the man knew his limitations, and his economic, stalking style called for fewer wild rushes than Rocky Marciano's, for example. Anything straying into this territory, which Louis moved around the ring with him, like a halo, got hit, very hard, often with multiple shots. Billy Conn knew this going in and constructed his fight plan around it - to be outside quickly, and to be inside at the correct angle. One of the best fight plans ever constructed, even if the little man blew it.
Marquez has something similair, but different, he carries his range with him too, but he ideally likes to counter-punch. Whereas Joe took economical steps forward, JMM mixes it up, he is happy to step back, but he is looking for the same opportunites, to punch, to draw his opponent into that firing range so that he can counter. And Marquez is the truest form of counter--puncher, he doesn't just counter punch punches, he counters space, steps, moves, feints, anything. And sometimes, these rushes backfire on him, especially as he's become more aggressive, but when it comes off, he puts his punches together so well, and from such a perfectly balanced position, he again reminds of Joe. He's a Louis-like puncher in my estimtion.
Furthermore, they are both expert at "bringing the man on" to shots, creating conditions whereby they are able to drill a guy moving in, and they both protect themselves well with movement behind the jab - though Marquez goes to the body with his far more, which makes things a bit easier.
Both are vulnerable to counter-straight punches straight down the pipe.
Basically they both use technical acument to draw men into their range and then hammer them. Anyone else see this or am I just pissing into the wind?
