22.01.08 - By Andrew Wake: According to a report in today’s South Yorkshire Star, Sheffield’s International Boxing Federation light-heavyweight champion Clinton Woods has agreed to defend his crown against Rocky Balboa star Antonio “The Magic Man” Tarver. The date being mooted is April 12th at the St. Pete Forum in Tampa, Florida. Showtime are likely to be televising..
An American showcase against such a well known adversary will come as a thankful consolation to the British puncher. He had been hoping to line up a big all British clash with long time rival and undisputed world super-middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe but it now appears a dead cert that the Welshman’s next fight will come against Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas in April.
The last time 35 year old Clinton, 41-3-1 with 24 KOs, ventured to the States was in September 2002 when he was thoroughly outclassed in six rounds by the then prime Roy Jones Jnr.
Woods has since put that crushing defeat behind him and feels that he has matured as a fighter. He captured his title by stopping the highly touted Rico Hoye in five rounds in early 2005 and has stated several times his belief that he can beat Tarver with relevant ease.
The fight will be the first time Tarver, 39 years old and a former light-heavyweight number one, is involved in a title affair sanctioned by one of the main four sanctioning bodies (IBO is not generally regarded as a legitimate world title) since he famously gave up his WBC championship in order face Glencoffe Johnson in 2004.
When quizzed about the fight Woods’ promoter Dennis Hobson, who usually talks openly about possible bouts, refused to comment. However, a few months ago Hobson did let it be known that he’d been in discussions with US television network Showtime about possibly putting Clinton on one of their cards. At present, other than Chad Dawson, the only fighter at light-heavyweight to have a deal with the TV company is Tarver, so read into that what you will.
tarver ko'd jones--->jones ko'd woods--->ipso facto, tarver ko's woods.
although jones beats tarver if they ever fought today cuz jones has settled into his weight now plus his new fighting style would take care of tarver.
Sorry man, but it doesn't mean that at all.
Here's an example for you:
Jerry Quarry TKO 1 Earnie Shavers
Earnie Shavers TKO 1 Jimmy Ellis
so that means Jerry Quarry should destroy Jimmy Ellis, right?
Nope, Jimmy Ellis W15 Jerry Quarry.
Plus the Roy Jones Jr that beat Clinton Woods was much better than the RJJ that lost to Tarver, add in the fact that the CW that will be facing Tarver is better than the CW that faced Jones and you can't really tell who will win this one. Plus Tarver is slipping a bit as well as evidenced by his one sided loss to Hopkins a year and a half ago.

Funny,i think Clinton could beat Tarver, but i think Chad Dawson would beat Woods the same way Roy did
lol, theres no way Dawson beats Clinton the way Roy did. that was an ass beating there, and Id be amazed if I saw something like that out of Dawson.
I really like this matchup. good choice! If Dawson-Johnson and Clinton-Tarver are on the same card, then thats shaping up to be a VERY meaningful card. Im quite excited.
Big Mistake by woods i think, he's not in the same league as tarver.
Woods isn't going to get any better than he is now, and Tarver can't have too much more left. I think there is more upside for Woods in this fight than the opposite. He can get real old waiting around for Jones or Calzaghe, and a win over Tarver gives him the leverage to make those type of fights actually happen.
The winner of the Dawson/Johnson matchup has to face the winner of a WBC LHW interim matchup between Adrian Diaconu (who's been dying for a title shot) and some other fighter.
That's a big IF.
Johnson, Diaconu, and Tarver. Not to bad of a year for the young Dawson.
Tarver has been supposed to take a number of big matches since Hopkins, but basically seems to be just looking to keep his name in the mix without taking any risks.
Talks with Dawson's people seemed to be starting off, but then Tarver just dismissed it totally.
A fight with Danny Green seemed signed & delivered, but Tarver never came through.
Hope it happens, because I think it is a pretty decent matchup that gets both the winner for some big money, but will believe it's set when Tarver actually steps in the ring.
Winner of Dawson/Johson faces winner of Tarver/Woods LET'S MAKE THIS SHIT HAPPEN!

if Johnson can beat Chad, and then we have unification time!
That's a big IF.
Its funny because 10 mins ago i just finished watching johnson woods 1 and i had johnson up by 3 rounds I think johnson should have won all 3 of those fights win or lose i would like to see johnson retire now a win against dawson would be a great way to end.
woods has to much for tarver who imo should retire.
Dawson gets Johnson inside of 8 rounds, Johnson has trouble with tall jabbers. Woods has been in with better fighters recently, which I think gives him an edge.
I will be shocked if Tarver can pull out a win against Woods. I'm hoping Tarver knows something we dont due to his claim of "You havent seen the best of Antonion Tarver".
