Was Mayweather (24-0, 18KO) dismantling Corrales (33-0, 28KO) in 10 rounds more impressive than Whitaker (32-1 ,15KO) near domination of Chavez(87-0,75KO)?
The question is "more impressive". How can anyone say Floyd-Diego? Chavez was 87-0 and had already beaten "Rock-a-bye" Ruben Castillo, Roger Mayweather, Rocky Lockridge, Juan Laporte, Edwin rosario, Rafael "Bazooka" Limon, Jose Luis Ramirez, Meldrick Taylor and Hector Camachoo. It's not even close.
Just to have beaten Chavez at the time was the most impressive thing that could have possibly happened. I think people are forgetting the aura and invincibility that surrounded Chavez (he had beaten A LOT of great fighters along with his bums at the start). For Whittaker to not only beat him but do it clearly was huge. A massive upset. Of even greater proportions because of the greatness of both the fighters. Chavez was a bit over the hill and above his dominant weight but it was still a much more impressive victory than Mayweather vs Corrales.
While a lot of people said Corrales was a huge puncher and better than anyone Floyd had faced, many thought Mayweather would still win. I personally think there was something wrong with Corrales that night. He didn't seem to be on at all. I can't even remember one time where he jabbed as he walked in. He just kept on walking straight in without throwing a damn thing. Yes, by the end that was because of Mayweather hitting him so much but he didn't even do it at the start.
Nonetheless, I don't think anyone apart from Floyd would have beaten Corrales the way Mayweather did that night. But still, in a cosmic kind of sense Whittaker over Chavez was much more impressive.
Did Chavez get knocked down 5 times?
Chavez and Corrales are a diifferent calibre of chin.
Chavez is ATG material. Corrales had a impressive record but is only associated with his amazing fight with Castillo and his loss to Floyd.
So how great Corrales was can maybe be a measuring stick as to how great Floyds win was.
And likewise of Whitaker-Chavez.
I agree with everything oldgringo said.
I would also: add Roger Mayweather to the list of JC's impressive wins.
Edit: You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to oldgringo again.
I know it's round by round, but when I think about absolute dominations, I think Calzaghe-Lacy, De La Hoya-Mayorga or Mayweather-Gatti... not Whitaker-Chavez. I mean, he clearly won, but everyone was talking about it being the worst robbery ever... there have been worse. Like the scoring of Douglas-Tyson at the point of stoppage, or Chuck Giampa having Chavez ahead of Meldrick Taylor when the TKO happened.
I didn't see that much of a domination, I thought Floyd was clearly winning the rounds, but didn't actually start kicking Hernandez's ass until the later rounds... it was a good performance, but it wasn't like Hernandez was afraid to show his face after the fight.I thought Whitaker did better against Chavez for sure than Meldrick. I had Meldrick up 8 rounds to 3 going into the final, but while winning the fight on points based on landing more punches, he was the one taking the beating. Whitaker on the other hand, while winning a similar amount of rounds, was taking almost no punishment, and actually had Chavez backing up toward the mid to later rounds.
Alright, but boxing is a round by round game. He wasn't completely dominating him, but he was winning most of the rounds clearly.
Mayweather did dominate Hernandez though.

Maybe I just suck ass at scoring... I didn't see Whitaker dominate Chavez, nor did I see Mayweather crush Genaro Hernandez... that looked a lot closer to me than everyone seems to think it was.
I didn't actually sit there and try to score Whitaker-Chavez like a judge, but I was watching and trying to keep a mental tally of who was getting the best of it... obviously it was Whitaker, but not by much in my estimation, and that's not to say that he didn't win a lot of the rounds, but he didn't totally spoil Chavez's gameplan like everyone seems to make it out to be.Alright, but boxing is a round by round game. Mayweather did dominate Hernandez though.
Guess he didn't realize that there was second page on the boxrec page for Chavez. :lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:

Mayweather beat the hell out of Corrales that night. That was on some Whitaker/Haugen type shit where their opponents were scared to throw by the end of the fight.
Every time I want to watch a clinic I go back and watch those fights.
My line of thinking is fairly in line with the rest of you. Whitaker beat a much scarier opponent, Mayweather never gave Chico a chance...but...
I mean really? You'd be hard pressed to find more than 3 rounds that Chavez won...and winning them clearly is a whole different matter all together. You guys gave him some charity rounds huh?
Everybody knows that Chavez was essentially fighting amateurs, unknowns and part time fighters early in his career. You aren't revealing some golden secret here.
That was the nature of the fight game for many of the great Latin American champions of that day. Look at the careers of Alexis Arguello, the great Ruben Olivares, Carlos Zarate, and even Roberto Duran to an extent. Arguello had north of 35 fights before taking on a notable opponent. Zarate and Olivares both took awhile to fight the best of their time.
By the time Chavez fought Whitaker, he had that spectacular 80something and 0 record and he had beaten fighters like:
Taylor
Lockridge
Martinez
Castillo
La Porte
Rosario
Ramirez
Camacho
Haugen
That is an excellent group of fighters among a long list of solid opponents he beat during his undefeated run as champion.
Now Miguel Cotto is my dude...probably my favorite fighter today seeing how Toney and Morales are no longer relevant. He has had a GREAT career so far and he has beaten a lot of capable fighters, including a great fighter in Mosley. HIS RECORD TO THIS POINT IS NOWHERE NEAR CHAVEZ' LEADING UP TO THAT WHITAKER FIGHT. Not even close yet. Knock off 40 something wins on Julio's record before he brutalized Mario Martinez and it's still not close. Cotto still has a long way to go to get on that level.
hahahaaa. That was good. "OMG Chavez beat Mario Martinez in his 4th pro fight!!!!!!!!!" nice catch.
Good post.

Also, I had Whitaker winning by a round, while Mayweather TKO'd Corrales. That is def. more impressive. Also, JCC had a padded record of nobodies in Mexico. Maybe 10 of his 80 some fights were against non-cab drivers.
I'm glad someone else didn't see an absolutely through outclassing by Whitaker like everyone else did. I thought Whitaker was winning the rounds, but I didn't think he was dominating the fuck out of them.

SEE what I'm saying, he DID have a padded record, he fought his fair share of good opponents but people can see through the numbers that make his record and pinpoint just how many good fighters he's faced, Cotto with a fraction of the overall fights he's just about up there with Chavez in number of good guys he faced, he started from his 10th professional bout fighting good guys like Justin Jukko up to Mosley, Chavez was fighting cans when he was 31-0, don't get me wrong he was an all time great but not enough people realize this.. 100

I voted Whitaker/Chavez, but that was absurd.
He did try fighting back, he just couldn't find Floyd. His style was to stalk him and hurt him for the later rounds, which is what he said he was gonna do, but Floyd never gave him a chance to hurt him. He couldn't fight back or counter because Floyd was too quick.
I'm sure he was thinking about his personal problems during the fight, getting sidetracked, LOL.
corrales was all heart in the ring. he'd fight his heart out no matter the circumstances or how far behind he was.
whitaker/chavez for the simple fact , corrales had a lot going through his mind, he didn't even try fighting backI voted Whitaker/Chavez, but that was absurd.

If you only had Whitaker winning by one round you don't know how to score boxing. The best it could've been for Chavez was 8-4 Whitaker.
I agree, and because the accomplishment meant more, and it was a dominant performance (even if not as dominant as Mayweather's), it's the more impressive feat. What he said.
