At the age of 27-years-old, Guadalajara's Abisai Mares, brother of former three division world champion Abner Mares, will make his pro debut later tonight in Tijuana, where Mexican fan favorites Jackie Nava and David Sánchez take part in a doubleheader on a Zanfer Promotions card. Mares, who debuts as a featherweight, will face Edgardo Daniel Ahumada (1-1).
Former four division world champion Erik Morales (52-9, 36KOs), 37-years-old, is still looking to end his 21 year career with a farewell fight in Mexico. Morales has been inactive four round knockout loss to Danny Garcia in October of 2012. Morales was going to face Jorge Paez Jr. in March, but withdrew with a hand injury. Paez ended up losing a decision to late replacement Vivian Harris. Morales hopes his hand will fully heal by the end of the month and then he plans to have one more fight before fully retiring.
Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is willing to explore the possibility of returning to action on September 13, which is the same day the Floyd Mayweather Jr. is expected to fight. A few days ago on BoxingScene.com, Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum discussed the possibility of staging an event at The Forum in Inglewood, California - on Mexican Independence Day weekend, and Chavez Jr. being tabbed for the card as the headliner.

Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. appears to have no interest in extending his promotional contract with Top Rank. Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank, says Chavez's contract ends in October 2015, which the Mexican boxer's camp disputes. There were serious negotiations to have Chavez face WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin at the 168-pound limit in July, but the fight fell apart over Chavez's position to receive a sizable purse without a contract extension.
According to Golden Boy Promtions head matchmaker Eric Gomez, former three division world champion Abner Mares (26-1-1, 14KOs) is now likely to return as part of the Showtime Pay-Per-View undercard to Saul "Canelo" Alvarez vs. Erislandy Lara, which takes place on July 12th from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Mares has been inactive since suffering a first round TKO defeat at the hands of Jhonny Gonzalez last August. They were set for a rematch in February, but then Mares withdrew with a rib injury. Mares then appeared to be returning on Golden Boy's Showtime date of June 21, which is now being ruled out.
According to the President of the World Boxing Council, Mauricio Sulaiman, newly crowned WBC heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne must faces his mandatory challenger, Deontay Wilder - and not WBA/IBO/IBF/WBO champion Wladimir Klitschko, who wants to face Stiverne next for all the titles. However, if a deal is reached between Wilder and Klitschko's team, where Wilder is paid money to step aside, then Sulaiman would endorse a Stiverne-Klitschko
According to World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman, they are holding the date of May 29th for a purse bid in connection with a WBC final featherweight eliminator between Abner Mares and Jayson Velez. The winner would get a crack at the WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez. Velez is ready to take the fight, but he believes Mares has other plans and doesn't intend to take part in the eliminator. Until Mares' plans are communicated to the WBC, Sulaiman will keep the purse bid date in place.
The legendary Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. has revealed that his son, Omar Chavez (32-2-1, 22KOs), has been offered a fight on July 19 against former lightweight champion Brandon Rios (31-2-1, 23KOs). Omar is willing to take the fight - but only if the fight takes place at the junior middleweight limit of 154-pounds. Omar says a catch-weight of 150 is being requested and that is too low for the boxer to make in a safe manner.
