Manny Pacquiao sat in his closet of a dressing room Wednesday at Wild Card Gym in Hollywood. Surrounded by a handful of reporters and one annoying photographer who rarely stopped clicking away, Pacquiao patiently answered questions put to him.
By Robert Morales - Who is Chad Dawson to call Bernard Hopkins "a p*ssy," the way he did after his way-out two-round fight with the living legend Saturday in Los Angeles? That's what Richard Schaefer wants to know. Schaefer is the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, which promotes Hopkins. When reached in Mexico City on Tuesday and queried about Dawson's remarks after his "technical knockout" victory, Schaefer became peeved. "If you look at what Dawson has acheived and what Bernard has achieved, it pretty much speaks for itself," Schaefer said to BoxingScene.com. "And it shows you that Chad Dawson really did not belong in the ring with Bernard Hopkins. Never did and never will and never should." Schaefer was just beginning. He hit hard. He said that typically there are satellite tours the week of these pay-per-view cards, where the PR team sets up the fighters for radio and TV interviews. Schaefer said not one radio or TV station requested Dawson, but they did request guys like Hopkins, undercard fighters Jorge Linares, Antonio DeMarcos and Paulie Malignaggi and promoter Oscar De La Hoya - president of Golden Boy.
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has asked the WBC for a rematch between Saturday's semi-main event fighters - Jorge Linares and Antonio DeMarco. Way ahead on the scorecards, Linares was stopped at 2:32 of the 11th round of the lightweight title fight.
Chad Dawson has had several top trainers work his corner. We're talking recognizable guys like Floyd Mayweather Sr., Eddie Mustafa Muhammad and most recently Emanuel Steward.
When Timothy Bradley became a free agent at the end of June, there were bound to be high-profile promoters after the junior welterweight champion from PalmSprings. A few days ago, Bob Arum of Top Rank Inc. corralled Bradley at a news conference at the Beverly Hills Hotel formally announcing the union.
Promoter Dan Goossen advised BoxingScene.com that heavyweight contender Chris Arreola will fight again Nov. 5 in Mexico.
By Robert Morales - Bob Arum has been promoting boxing for over 40 years. In all that time, he said he can't think of one fighter who would have taken advantage of the situation the way Floyd Mayweather Jr. did during his fourth-round knockout of Victor Ortiz on Sept. 17. "I really don't know any," Arum said Tuesday. Had he seen anyone do anything even similar to Mayweather's surprise KO of Ortiz? "Nope," Arum said. When Ortiz's promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, played host to a conference call Monday with Ortiz and his manager, Rolando Arellano, De La Hoya was asked if during his many years as a fighter he knew anyone who would have clocked an opponent immediately following a sportsmanlike embrace. "Zero, none of them," De La Hoya said. "Not even Ricardo Mayorga would have done that." What about Fernando Vargas, who was busted for steroids after being knocked out by De La Hoya in the 11th round in September 2002? "Not even a Fernando Vargas," De La Hoya said. "And that tells you a lot. This fight was barely warming up. We were cheated, everyone was cheated - especially Victor Ortiz - from a great fight happening." Interestingly, Mayorga was at the post-fight news conference. He was interviewed about what happened by good friend Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times. According to Pugmire, Mayorga told him he would have done exactly what Mayweather did. Anyway, Arum was asked if Mayweather's actions make him think twice about putting his Manny Pacquiao in with Mayweather?
By Robert Morales - Promoter Bob Arum certainly has not given up on a fight between his Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. But that fight would lose a lot of luster off its shine if Mayweather were to lose to Victor Ortiz on Saturday or Pacquiao were to lose to Juan Manuel Marquez on Nov. 12. It was therefore no surprise to hear Arum handicap Saturday's fight minutes before he played host to a news conference last week in Beverly Hills promoting Pacquiao-Marquez III slated for MGM Grand in Las Vegas. "I think Ortiz is a good, young fighter," Arum said. "But he's really inexperienced and in fighting Floyd he's fighting a guy who really knows boxing. So I don't give Ortiz much of a chance to beat Mayweather. "I mean, he's going to try. But I just don't give him a chance." Arum makes sense. And that's exactly what he wants if and when he sits down again to try and successfully negotiate a fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather - common sense.
It's no secret that Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Oscar De La Hoya - president of Golden Boy Promotions - have been engaging in a war of words.
Earlier this week, Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum was asked to handicap next Saturday's big welterweight fight between Victor Ortiz and Floyd Mayweather Jr. As he always does, he gave an opinion that suits his needs - in this case, millions upon millions of dollars promoting a fight between his company superstar, Manny Pacquiao, and Mayweather being the opponent in other corner.
