With Floyd Mayweather Jr. going to jail for a domestic violence conviction, it's doubtful he will be able to participate in a fight with welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao until perhaps the latter part of 2012.
By Robert Morales - Promoter Bob Arum said as recently as late last month that, things were in motion regarding the possible Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao fight. Richard Schaefer is CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, which has promoted Mayweather's past few fights. At one point Arum suggested that Schaefer was being left out of any Mayweather-Pacquiao talks, which angered Golden Boy in general. Schaefer assured BoxingScene.com that there is not one bit of negotiating currently taking place for this fight, in spite of Arum having said there are several companies that have come forward offering to finance what would be the biggest money-making fight in history. "Bob Arum. Who the hell gives a s**t about Bob Arum?" Schaefer said. "He can say whatever he wants. I'm astonished that some media members still give credibility to what comes out of his mouth. What Arum is saying, it's pretty sad. He's such a liar. "He is making up all these stories. He is fooling some of these media members over and over again. I couldn't care less what he says. He's lying and that's all I have to say about it. There are no negotiations; they don't want to do it. He is probably doing it to fool Pacquiao, to make him think there is something going on. There is nothing going on." The Mayweather camp said it has reserved a May 5 date for Mayweather's next fight, and indicated it wanted Pacquiao to be the opponent. But it takes two to tango. Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather's adviser, did not return a call seeking comment. Arum is on holiday vacation, according to Top Rank Inc. spokesman Lee Samuels.
Dan Goossen promotes heavyweight contender Chris Arreola (34-2, 29 KOs), who has won six consecutive fights since losing a majority decision to Tomasz Adamek in April 2010. In his most recent bout, on Nov. 5 in Mexico, Arreola stopped Raphael Butler in the third round.
The theory goes that fighters not from the United States want to come here so they can become more known, which in turn can further a career.
Antonio Margarito was riding in a car Friday in New York City on his way to the weigh-in for his rematch against Miguel Cotto tonight at Madison Square Garden (on HBO pay-per-view). Cotto's junior middleweight belt will be on the line.
By Robert Morales - By now it's obvious that the peace between Bob Arum and Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions was short-lived. The newest edition to what has been a long-running feud came this week when Arum suggested to BoxingScene.com's Michael Marley that Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer likely won't have anything to do with negotiations for a potential fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Arum said that Schaefer is "on the outside looking in. Who knows and who cares what Richard says?" De La Hoya on Tuesday played host to a workout for the four fighters involved in Saturday's co-feature bouts at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. De La Hoya was asked how confident he is about Pacquiao-Mayweather being made. De La Hoya then went off on Arum on a variety of issues. "Well, I mean, we know Pacquiao wants the fight, we know Mayweather wants the fight; that's a given," De La Hoya. "And Bob Arum is coming out with this nonsense that Richard Schaefer is not even involved with Mawywether. It's ridiculous now what Bob is talking. Everybody wants the fight except Bob Arum; he doesn't want the fight. What's the problem? Let's make it happen."
Golden Boy promotes junior middleweight contender James Kirkland, who got up from a first-round knockdown to stop Alfredo Angulo in the sixth round Nov. 5 in Mexico. Golden Boy's President, Oscar De La Hoya said the possibilities are many for Kirkland's next fight, including a fight with WBC world champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez - another Golden Boy fighter. Interestingly, De La Hoya also mentioned a possible rematch with Nobuhiro Ishida, the light-hitter who stopped Kirkland in the first round in April in Las Vegas.
By Robert Morales - A promotional company pitting two of its best fighters against each other is not exactly a common occurrence. But that's what Golden Boy Promotions is doing with James Kirkland and Alfredo Angulo, who Saturday will square off in a WBC junior middleweight title elimination fight in Mexico (on HBO). Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy, was asked why he is doing something a lot of promoters would not. "It's one of those fights people get excited about," Schaefer said of what is almost a can't-miss barnburner. "If you look at 154 pounds, I think this is one of the most exciting punch-for-punch fights one can put together. It's not easy to please HBO to get these dates as they have very high standards on who they accept as fights; that is one of the fights they wanted. "I talked to the fighters and they were willing to do it. It's a high risk for either one of those fighters and for us as well. And talk about excitement, this fight has excitement written all over it." Schaefer agreed boxing needs more of this.
Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum promotes WBO welterweight king Manny Pacquiao. He was asked if he agreed with trainer Freddie Roach's assessment that Pacquiao's upcoming fight with Juan Manuel Marquez won't go past the sixth round.
Manny Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, has expressed concern that Pacquiao is going too hard in camp, according to the boxer's trainer Freddie Roach. The Filipino superstar is training at Roach's Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, as he prepares for his November 12th trilogy fight with Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Pacquiao's WBO welterweight title is on the line, with a catch-weight of 144-pounds in place.
