Lamont Roach is a good fighter. He’s technically sound; he’s a championship-level fighter. But as far as opponents for Gervonta “Tank” Davis in a pay-per-view event go, I’d prefer to see someone...
Edgar Berlanga’s got a good record, and he’s a marketable fighter. But even when he had some momentum he didn’t seem the right next challenger for the super middleweight title.
When we’d been expecting to see Shakur Stevenson fight William Zepeda, and hoping he’d fight Gervonta “Tank” Davis, it’s difficult to be supportive of Joe Cordina challenging for Stevenson’s WBC lightweight title.
Terence Crawford and Israil Madrimov both fought very, very well on Saturday night. So much so the only fair reason I can see anyone having for criticising Crawford is if they’re considering whether he can keep Saul “Canelo” Alvarez off him should they ever fight.
In victory over Artem Harutyunyan, Shakur Stevenson again showed how good he really is. He might not have been exciting, but he’ll beat the exciting fighters he’s matched with, which ultimately is the bottom line
I’m not convinced that Gervonta “Tank” Davis is the best lightweight in the world, but he’s certainly the most exciting. He’s certainly also an elite fighter. Frank Martin, his opponent on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, is also in the top five.
My former opponent Ricky Hatton, the late Diego Corrales and Ivan Calderon are all very worthy inductees into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Tyson Fury-Oleksandr Usyk is a really exciting fight – there’s so much to analyse that it’s really difficult to call
If it can’t be David Benavidez, Jaime Munguia’s a solid challenger to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on Saturday – he’s a top five super middleweight. The all-Mexican element of Canelo-Munguia, in Las Vegas on Cinco de Mayo weekend, also gives it another element – not least because Mexican fans are the most vocal in this part of the world. The timing of Saturday’s fight makes it interesting. Munguia, 27, has defensive flaws but he seems to be getting better and better, and the appointment of Freddie Roach as his trainer can only benefit him. It’s also increasingly being questioned whether Canelo is as good, and as hungry, as he once was. Munguia – who looks very hungry, because he can detect the potential superstardom within his reach – is edging closer to the top of the 168lbs division, but is he still easy enough to hit that Canelo can pick him off between the punches that Munguia throws? Canelo remains a quality fighter, but can he still avoid it becoming difficult in there against Munguia, and if he can’t, does he have the desire to win a difficult fight?
