By Lyle Fitzsimmons - I really like Tyson Fury. He’s an interesting guy. He’s a terrific fighter. And he’s got a back story – complete with redemptive elements – that’s undoubtedly world class. But this weekend, he’s more obstacle than leading man. Because when it comes to this era’s big men, others have the star power. Those in their 50s will...
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Buster Douglas beat Mike Tyson today. Thirty years ago today that is. And while consoling myself to the idea I'm old enough to clearly recall an event that occurred three decades ago, part of me still reacts with the same slack-jawed shock I displayed upon initially learning the fateful Tokyo result in real time back on Feb. 11, 1990...
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Every comeback needs an opponent. But as for James Kirkland’s latest ring return, at least one man believes they chose poorly. That man is Marcos Hernandez. “I think a lot of people know of James Kirkland because of his aggressive style. He fought Canelo so he’s fought at the highest level possible,” said the 26-year-old Californian...
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Upon further review, he did leave himself an out. Because Demetrius Andrade will be fighting this week in my big South Florida backyard – a few days before the Super Bowl in Miami, to be exact – I was reminiscing about the first time I’d talked to the now-WBO middleweight champion, just two months shy of 11 years ago. By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Stephen Fulton Jr. is in a good place. And if a fighter’s demeanor – particularly a cool, confident, almost playful mood – only five days before entering the ring is indicative, it could be a very big weekend for the little Philadelphia belt-holder. In fact, the 25-year-old super bantamweight will be introduced as a reigning and defending...
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - When a Deontay Wilder combination left Tyson Fury horizontal in the final round of their get-together 13 months ago in Los Angeles, the exultations were immediate. The Staples Center crowd went berserk. The WBC champ strutted to a neutral corner. And the Showtime broadcast crew revved its hyperbolic engines. “Mamma Mia...
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - It’s just more than five months away. That’s 156 days, for you need-to-be-exact types. Either way, for boxing fans, few weekends on the calendar provide the drama and jubilation as the one in which the International Boxing Hall of Fame's newest class is enshrined. The Class of 2020 was made public last month - congrats to...
If you’ve gotten to this point and aren’t happy, it’s your own fault. You should have seen it coming last year. In keeping with tradition in this Tuesday morning space, we proactively greet the New Year with a preview of stories other boxing scribes will be reacting to about 12 months from now.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - There are a couple things I’ve always promised myself. I barely play golf. But if I was ever lucky enough to score a hole in one, I’ve vowed to pluck the ball out of the cup, slide the club into the bag and head straight to my car – because it’ll never get any better. Same goes for bowling. I consider myself a decent bowler, but If I ever...
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - A year’s time has made quite a difference for Jermell Charlo. In December of 2018, while preparing for a title defense against Tony Harrison, the then-incumbent WBC 154-pound champion barely acknowledged his foe during a full-length interview...And when he did, he wasn’t exactly showering the challenger – then ranked fifth...
