LIKE FOR AMBITIOUS recording artists with global aspirations, the name of the game is to crack America – and it is much the same when it comes to boxing. This is why I am so pleased that two of our more recognizable names are being given the opportunity to perform and shine across the Atlantic.
WE HAD, QUITE literally, a banging night at Wembley’s SSE Arena last Saturday, with high skills, big bombs and true grit aplenty across a hugely entertaining evening. It was truly magical to have the fans back in big numbers and those that joined us at Wembley created such a special atmosphere in support of the fighters, who I am sure appreciated it, as did I. It was like a proper old school fight night all the way through, with the vast majority taking their seats early and enjoying every fight.
I DON’T WANT to tempt fate or put the mockers on it, but I think all England fans are allowing ourselves to dream a little at the moment, aren’t we? There is – until events finally unfold for real on Wednesday night – a strong chance that we will be looking forward to a Euro2020 (/21) Championship final between England and Italy at Wembley Stadium on Sunday evening.
THE HEAVY MOB are coming to town on July 24 at the SSE Arena, Wembley when the Big Juggernaut, Joe Joyce, resumes his mission to hit the pinnacle of the heavyweight pecking order. Joe, who has been matched tough throughout his professional career to date, really put a marker down in the division late last year when he toppled a formidable young force in Daniel Dubois.
WHEN THE FOOTBALL is poised to draw to a close we are ready to return a serving of top boxing back to your screens on July 10 in one of London’s most regal settings. The venue for our BT broadcast fistic delivery is the grand old Royal Albert Hall, which we have happily restored to the boxing map over the last couple of years or so. There really is no place like it for watching the sport and, if you haven’t experienced it, I recommend you giving it a bash.
THE SMILE PAINTED across the face of Daniel Dubois following his resounding destruction of Bogdan Dinu on Saturday night told its own story. The usually reserved Daniel generally doesn’t give much away with words or expression, but there was no hiding his natural joy and relief over having got his career firmly back on track.
THE STAKES WILL be perilously high when the BT Sport cameras home in on the action for the main event at the Telford International Centre on Saturday night. The meteoric rise of Daniel Dubois hit the buffers at the back end of November when a horrendous injury to the left eye – inflicted by his fellow unbeaten heavy Joe Joyce – saw to it that the younger contender felt compelled to take himself out of the firing line.
EVENTS IN THE early hours of Sunday morning demonstrated once again that size does matter in the sport of boxing. The richly skilled ring craft of Billy Joe Saunders was just not enough to knock the Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez bandwagon off course. Put simply, he is just too big and too strong at the weight, along with the many others he has campaigned at across his 59-fight career. And he can fight a bit too, I should add.
ON FRIDAY NIGHT Sunny Edwards has the opportunity to punch himself into the flyweight history books by beating a highly decorated champion in Moruti Mthalane and taking home the IBF world title belt.
WE’VE GOT A proper British title middleweight banger on the cards this Saturday night from York Hall when our man Denzel Bentley defends his Lonsdale belt, while at the same time attempting to seize the Commonwealth crown of his opponent, Felix Cash.
