On Saturday night, Argentina’s Lucas Matthysse will set foot inside of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas for his 36th professional boxing match. Having clamored for a fight with WBA/WBC junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia for quite some time, Matthysse (32-2, 30 KO's) instead sets his sights on the capable Mike Dallas Jr. (19-2-1, 8 KO's) in a Showtime-televised attraction while holding on to the hope that bigger fights still await him.

The gym scene in Las Vegas has been heating up the past few weeks, with several world class fighters and upcoming prospects putting in serious work at various spots in the city. The gyms are always full of chatter and one recent sighting that has gone unnoticed in boxing circles was the fact that former WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal was seen training with Floyd Mayweather Sr. “Yeah, he was in Vegas,” Floyd Sr. confirmed to me during a recent discussion. “He was in Vegas for a good five or six days. I trained him while he was here. He’s got pretty fast hands and he’s got fairly decent power. The work was going perfectly.”

The boxing world is still discussing the shocking knockout of Manny Pacquiao. Roger Mayweather, the uncle and trainer of Floyd Mayweather Jr., was not surprised that Juan Manuel Marquez was able to knock Pacquiao out in the sixth round of their fourth fight on December 8th. There have been rumors of possible PED use, but Roger doesn't go in that direction. He says Pacquiao was knocked out before, and he was knocked out again by a fighter with similar physical qualities.

On Saturday night, inside of the Los Angeles Sports Arena, former two-time junior welterweight champion Amir Khan made a successful return to the ring in dispatching a brave but outgunned Carlos Molina after ten bloody rounds. Watching the action from ringside was Philadelphia’s Danny Garcia, the reigning WBA and WBC junior welterweight champion. In July, Garcia stopped Khan in under four rounds in their Las Vegas clash at the Mandalay Bay and the British star has been itching for a rematch in order to even the score.

This weekend is a very important one for respected trainer Virgil Hunter. Known best for his work with super middleweight king Andre Ward, Hunter will be shifting his focus to two of his newest pupils, former two-time junior welterweight champion Amir Khan and junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo. Eyes will be locked on Khan intently as he returns to the ring to face unbeaten lightweight prospect Carlos Molina inside of the Los Angeles Sports Arena on Saturday night. This is Khan’s first fight with Hunter as well as his return bout following a disastrous 4th round TKO loss at the hands of Danny Garcia in July.

On Saturday night, Mexico City’s Juan Manuel Marquez produced the most stirring victory of his career in stopping his rival Manny Pacquiao in dramatic fashion inside of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Facing Pacquiao for a fourth time, Marquez found himself involved in another incredible battle, as the two fighters traded knockdowns before a bloodied Juan Manuel unleashed a short right hand in the closing seconds of the sixth round that dropped Pacquiao to the canvas and left him unconscious.
