This Saturday's Showtime televised main event is not winning any popularity contests. Rod Salka (19-3, 3KOs), a big underdog, is moving up to challenge WBC/WBA junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia (28-0, 16KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The fight is a ten round non-title bout. When Salka was announced as Garcia's next opponent, a tidal wave of criticism came crashing on the fight. Fans and media alike were shocked at the selection of Salka.

Algieri Says Taylor is Capable of Shocking Adrien Broner

WBO junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri is very familiar with Emmanuel Taylor (18-2, 12KOs). Algieri won a tough ten round decision over Taylor in February. Two fights later, Algieri is a beltholder and challenging WBO 147-pound champion Manny Pacquiao on November 22nd in Macau. Taylor has been able to position himself for big things as well. He won a ten round decision over once highly regarded Karim Mayfield in July, and now faces one of the most recognizable names in boxing, Adrien Broner (28-1, 22KOs), on September 6th at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Hopkins: I Want To Beat Kovalev Better Than I Did Pavlik!

WBA/IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (55-6-2, 32KOs) is not only looking to win, he's looking to win big when he faces the dangerous WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (25-0-1, 23KOs) in an HBO televised unification on November 8th. Hopkins, nearly 50-years-old, wants to eclipse one of his biggest career victories - the 2008 HBO televised twelve round domination of then undefeated, and heavily favored to win, Kelly Pavlik. In that fight, Hopkins turned back the clock and boxed Pavlik's ears off. Pavlik, who met Hopkins at a catch-weight of 170-pounds, was never the same fighter.

Back on March 9th of 2013, Bernard Hopkins became the last fighter promoted by Golden Boy Promotions to appear in action on HBO. Not too long after that, the network made a company decision to cut their business ties with Golden Boy. HBO had become frustrated with former Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer and influential adviser Al Haymon, who manages/advises the majority of Golden Boy's stable.

Hopkins Hints at Possible Golovkin Clash After Kovalev

If IBF/WBA light heavyweight champion (55-6-2, 32KOs) overcomes the tough challenge of WBO champ Sergey Kovalev (25-0-1, 23KOs) on November 8th, he is going to pursue the biggest fight possible - and that fight might not necessarily be a unification with WBC kingpin Adonis Stevenson. Hopkins said he was willing to go down in weight for the right fight, and hinted at two possible names in the lower weight division. He said he was open to facing someone with a 'four letter word' [WBA super middleweight champ Andre Ward] or a 'three letter word' [WBA/IBO 160-pound champ Gennady "GGG" Golovkin].

WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev believes he got the last laugh on his division rival, WBC champion Adonis Stevenson. HBO spent most of 2013 building up a Stevenson-Kovalev unification. Stevenson threw a wrench in those plans by jumping ship to rival network Showtime, with the hope of facing WBA/IBF champion Bernard Hopkins. On Friday, a major power play was finalized when Hopkins unexpectedly signed a contract to face Kovalev on November 8th, on HBO.

Promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, who handle the career of WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27KOs), feels confident that a fight between his feared boxer from Kazakhstan, and WBC middleweight Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs) - is currently the biggest possible fight that anyone can stage on New York soil.

Abel Sanchez, trainer of WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27KOs), wants his boxer to unify with WBC king Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs). Last Saturday night, Golovkin headlined in the big room at New York's Madison Square Garden, where he stopped Daniel Geale in three rounds. MSG is Cotto's second home in the United States. The Puerto Rican star draw records crowds of over 20,000 fans to his fights. That's why Sanchez believes a fight with Cotto, to decide which boxer is the best at middleweight, is the perfect contest for MSG.

Perez Blames American Influence For Jennings Win

Tough Cuban heavyweight Mike Perez (20-1-1, 12KOs) was not a happy camper in the aftermath of Saturday's split decision loss to Bryant Jennings (19-0, 10KOs). Their HBO televised WBC eliminator took place at New York's Madison Square Garden. The referee, Harvey Dock, took away a point from Perez in the twelfth and final round. He claimed Perez disobeyed his instructions for a clean break by punching Jennings in the face. That point deduction gave Jennings the victory with scores of 114-113 and 115-112. The third judge saw Perez as the 114-113 winner. Without the point deduction, the fight would have been a split draw.

Team Golovkin To Pursue Sam Soliman Unification

WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27KOs) just blew away one fighter from Australia and he might have another Aussie star in his sights. On Saturday night at New York's Madison Square Garden, Golovkin only needed three rounds to take out two-time champion Daniel Geale. Golovkin is likely going to return on an HBO televised date in October or November. He would like to face WBC champion Miguel Cotto, who returns in December. A fight with Cotto is more realistic for 2015 - although most insiders expect the Puerto Rican star to return to junior middleweight.
