MGM Grand Garden Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, Nev. - If Amir Khan (31-3, 19KOs) pulls off the upset on Saturday night against World Boxing Council middleweight world champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman won't be shocked.
"I think it is a great fight. Khan has tremendous boxing ability, fast hands and fast feet. I think if Canelo isn't at the top of his game especially concentration wise this can turn out to be a very difficult fight. Chavez lost his undefeated record opening the MGM and now with the opening of T-Mobile that could be a very interesting element," Sulaiman explained.
As for what happens if Khan does indeed get the win and capture the WBC middleweight title, Sulaiman said that Khan will a choice to make.
"If he wins he has the option to go back to welterweight or stay at middleweight - he will decide - that is why there is so much at stake for both fighters. It is a great fight," Sulaiman told BoxingScene.com.
Staying at middleweight means facing mandatory challenger and WBA/IBF/IBO/WBC interim champion Gennady Golovkin while dropping back down to welterweight would mean facing WBC champion Danny Garcia in a rematch of their 2012 bout that Garcia won by stoppage.
Despite his move in weight, the WBC has allowed Khan to retain his position as the mandatory challenger to Garcia's welterweight crown.
