According to Jose 'Chepo' Reynoso, trainer and manager of WBC 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, the door is not closed on a possible fall fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26KOs). The two boxers were negotiating a possible fall match, which Canelo claims Mayweather turned his back on by refusing to sign a contract. Canelo will face WBA champion Austin Trout in a unification match on April 20th in San Antonio, and Mayweather will defend his WBC welterweight title against Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
"We have to fight the best, and Mayweather is the best, so we have not at all ruled him out or closed the door on him. Right now he and Saul have their own commitments, and after these fights we can go back and see if they can resume negotiations," Chepo said. "[Sergio] Martinez and [Miguel] Cotto are names that still sound very good for September and we think they are very important - and of course we want to face either of them. Right now there no negotiations, but are future projects for us."
"Right now everything is geared to face Trout at the Alamodome, where there is much interest in seeing Canelo go against a tough opponent. We confident that we will move forward and once and for all everyone will realize that he is a great champion."
