World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman says the upcoming fall mega-fight between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and challenger Saul "Canelo" Alvarez - is the perfect opportunity for the young Mexican superstar to redeem himself.
Canelo faced pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September of 2013. He was dominated over twelve round in a largely one-sided contest. Since that fight, Canelo has won three fights - over Alfredo Angulo, Erislandy Lara and James Kirkland.
If Canelo defeats Cotto, the only Puerto Rican fighter to win world titles in four weight division, Sulaiman expects the Mexican fighter's stock to skyrocket.
"It's the fight everyone expected and a chance for Canelo to redeem himself and reach the level he always wanted," Sulaiman said.
"It's a great opportunity for him after losing to Mayweather. He already has had three fights since coming back and he's progressed forward. I think it's time to show what has been expected of him, to reach [the expected] level and worldwide recognition. If he manages to beat Cotto, he will be positioned very high in boxing."
