Angel 'Memo' Heredia, the strength and conditioning coach of former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (49-2-1, 32KOs), already has a training place in mind for a potential mega-fight with Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (48-1-1, 34KOs).
The two camps are discussing the possibility of this match, for an HBO Pay-Per-View headliner on May 6th for Cinco De Mayo weekend.
Two weeks ago, Chavez Jr. returned to the ring and won a hard-fought ten round unanimous decision over Germany's Dominik Britsch (32-3-1, 11KOs) in Monterrey, Mexico. Memo helped train Chavez for the fight and it was the first time in two years that the Mexican boxer made the super middleweight limit.
For the contest with Canelo, both sides are negotiating a catch-weight of 165-pounds. Chavez would have to drop down by three pounds and Canelo would have to move up by eleven pounds. Canelo, who currently holds the WBO junior middleweight title, has been out of the ring since knocking out Liam Smith back in September.
To ensure that Chavez safely makes the contract weight of 165, Memo would require a 90 day training period.
"If the fight is concrete, I would like to start the preparation on February 6 or 15 - at least with the physical part, so that Julio could reach the weight of 165 pounds that's being discussed," said Memo to ESPN Deportes.
"I would like to have a camp starting in Sinaloa and finishing in Toluca or even better in the Otomí Ceremonial Center, especially if the preparation is done in Mexico I always looking for high elevation.
"But if the preparation goes to California, I'm thinking of maybe working with Freddie Roach [at the Wild Card Gym], and then I would look for us to go to Big Bear, also for the high elevation, which is super important for the closing of the camp."
