Pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs) has questioned the high popularity, and the ability, of his next opponent, WBC/WBA 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs). Their fight happens at a catch-weight of 152-pounds on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Mayweather also feels former three division champion Miguel Cotto is a better fighter than Canelo. In his last fight at 154, last May, Mayweather won a tough decision over Cotto in Las Vegas. Cotto was then beaten by Autsin Trout by way of a lopsided decision, and then Canelo decisioned Trout in April. But, styles make fights.
"It was a smart decision by my team, Leonard Ellerbe and Al Haymon, to continue to put this guy on my undercards, to let him slowly build his fanbase. And of course in Mexico, there could be a fighter who wins a minor belt and they are going to cheer for him And that's great," Mayweather told Bernardo Osuna.
"He's 42-0, I'm 44-0. I don't think he has faced a Floyd Mayweather yet. I think Miguel Cotto is stronger fighter, is a tougher fighter and [I personally think] a better fighter. "
