WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs) is not overly impressed with the unbeaten record of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs). Mayweather explained, in detail, why he isn't impressed with Canelo's April decision win over Autsin Trout, who was coming off a decision win over Miguel Cotto. Mayweather won a tougher than expected unanimous decision over Cotto in May of 2012.
Canelo defends his WBC/WBA junior middleweight titles against Mayweather on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
"Cotto was not 100% for that fight. He was just coming off training for the biggest fight of his career, against me. He thought Trout was just a tune-up," Mayweather said.
"Trout, he didn't beat Cotto at 100%. It might have been more impressive if he knocked Cotto out. Cotto thought he was just a tune-up and he didn't take him serious. And the fight was close, it could have went either way I thought. Trout got a close fight against Cotto, but who else has he fought? I didn't even know who he was. Sometimes guys can overlook guys. Trout came in, fought one fight, made some noise - and as easy as he came in is as easy as he [was out]. Trout is solid but he is not Floyd Mayweather. Trout is no Genaro Hernandez."
"I fought Miguel Cotto, not his brother. I fought Ricky Hatto when he was undefeated and I didn't let him go the distance. I fought Shane Mosley coming off one of his biggest wins. He had a belt and I didn't even want it, I said 'keep your belt.'"
