Unbeaten heavyweights Luis Ortiz and Jarrell Miller appear to be on a collision course for a springtime clash.
The matchup is perfectly fine with Ortiz, as the bout gives him a chance to finally put a face with the name - and more important, with the mouth that has said quite a bit about the undefeated Cuban-southpaw.
"I can't speak on Miller as a fighter because I haven't seen him fight, but people have told me he is talking a bunch of crap about me," Ortiz (27-0, 23KOs) told BoxingScene.com. "He might talk his way into a fight he can't get out of. I say be careful what you say they might give it to you, then what? We will see if he is all bark."
Miller has made the rounds through the media, offering particularly biting comments in a recent interview with BoxingScene.com senior writer Keith Idec.
“We’ve heard about it,” Miller (18-0-1, 16KOs) told BoxingScene.com about a fight against Ortiz. “I don’t really think too much of Ortiz. Everybody thinks he’s the most scary guy in the division. I’m another scary guy in the division. No one wants to fight him and no one wants to fight me. I guess they’re giving me the task to go beat his old ass.
“But if I go beat up the No. 1, hardest guy in the division, after I beat him up, where does that leave me? Then nobody’s gonna wanna fight me. The only way I’ll take that fight is if I get a mandatory title shot directly after that. After I whip his old ass, I want a mandatory title shot. I’ll go at [IBF champion] Anthony Joshua, or have the WBO give me the winner of Joseph Parker and Hughie Fury. There’s a reason why they’re staying away from me. If I take that Ortiz fight, they’ve gotta give me some kind of guarantee because I’m gonna beat the brakes off that old motherf***er. That’s how I see it.”
The 28-year old Brooklyn-bred heavyweight certainly looks the part but will still be making a significant leap in competition with an Ortiz clash.
His most recent outing was a step in the right direction, forcing divisional trialhorse Fred Kassi to quit on his stool after three rounds last August. The bout aired live on Showtime's ShoBox series, his second appearance of the year on the circuit with a showcase bout on CBS Sports Network wedged in between to provide a three-win campaign on the year.
Whereas Miller wants guarantees of a bigger fight in the future, the fellow undefeated heavyweight whom he's trashed is simply looking to remain active regardless of the opponent.
"The matchup between myself and baby Miller, is just another fight and fighter for me," insists Ortiz, who is coming off of a 7th round stoppage of David Allen last December following a slow-moving 12-round decision over Malik Scott one month prior. "He is out there pleading a case in which he has no case to plea.He has not fought anyone nor has he ever been tested against a real fighter.
"I am very sure he is a good fighter, but if and when we fight he will have to back up all the crap he is talking. And to be honest, he doesn't want this fight. that's the reason for all the excuses. Why should they give him anything, fight for yours like I am doing."
