UFC champion Kamaru Usman is still very eager to have a crossover boxing match with Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

To take part in such a fight, Usman would have to secure permission from UFC President Dana White.

Back in 2017, UFC superstar Conor McGregor was allowed to dip his feet into boxing - and stepped in the ring with five division world champion Floyd Mayweather.

In what became the second highest grossing pay-per-view event in history, Mayweather broke down and stopped McGregor in ten rounds.

Usman, who holds the UFC's welterweight title, wants White and the rest of the UFC brass to get on board with making a fight against Canelo.

"Well, those conversations are still to be had. But, you know like I've said, this fight will be the greatest and the biggest fight ever in the history of combat sports," Usman told BT Sport.

"And that's because we've got to have the biggest and the baddest promoter ever in the history of combat sports, Dana White, behind us."

Canelo is scheduled to return to the ring on May 7, when he moves up to light heavyweight to challenge WBA champion Dmitry Bivol.

Should everything go as planned, Canelo will also fight in September during Mexican Independence Day weekend in a trilogy fight with Gennadiy Golovkin, who has to win his middleweight unification next month with Ryota Murata.

Usman believes September is the perfect time to have a clash with Canelo.

"Mexican Independence Day, I think it's only right for me and Canelo to give the world a show, give the world the entertainment they so desire. You know, I've said it before, it can't be done until someone does do it. I respect him, he's a great champion, he's the pound-for-pound best," Usman said.

"I have to show him that respect but he needs to show me that respect as well."
