It’s been well over a month since it was revealed that Jermell Charlo, not his twin brother Jermall, would take on Canelo Alvarez. Having spent the entirety of his career at 154 pounds, it seemed like a far-fetched idea to have the junior middleweight champion make the move two full-weight classes north. Nevertheless, Jermell is officially packing on the pounds, fattening his bank account, and chasing greatness.

Jermall, the WBC middleweight champion, was long rumored to be the one facing Alvarez. Still, while his brother has answered the call, Jermall plans on lending his twin a helping hand. Almost no one, including his trainer Derrick James, knows Jermell quite as well as Jermall. So, when asked to give his prediction, it came as no surprise that he’s on the side of his family free.

“Charlo,” said Jermall when asked to pick a winner. “Charlo. We know how to beat him.”

Oddsmakers hear Jermall loud and clear but they're still dubious that his words will become prophetic. As Jermell ramps up the intensity to his September 30th ring return, he’s enjoying the extra portions of food and the instructions that his twin is providing him with.

By and large, Jermell has kept a somewhat active schedule over the years, Jermall, on the other hand, has been sequestered longer than normal. Currently, Jermall’s inactive stretch has reached just over two years.

Unofficially, there isn’t an exact target date for his return. It’s also an open-ended question whether or not he’ll defend his middleweight crown or campaign at 168 pounds. No matter the decision, Charlo is anxious to pick up the pieces of what was once a promising career.

In terms of when he expects to dust off his gloves and step into the ring full-time, Charlo assured his fans that things will get back to normal in the coming months.

“I’ll be back before the end of the year. I promise you that.”
