Veteran Alfonso Gomez (24-4-2, 12 KOs) has promised to punish WBC junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (37-0-1, 27 KOs) on September 17th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Gomez plans to press the action and test Alvarez's worth as a fighter. He wants to show his Mexican roots to the rising star.
"I'm going to take full advantage of this. I plan to really teach Canelo a lesson what it's like to be in there with a real Mexican who's not going away and takes every punch and keeps on coming. It's now or never for me. The other chance happened a few ago [Miguel Cotto]. I'm already 30 going on to 31 and I'm not going to be 34 and looking for another chance. I want to capitalize of this opportunity," Gomez told Luis Sandoval of BoxingScene.com.
Gomez has been fighting as a welterweight, but doesn't see any issues with facing Alvarez at 154-pounds.
"As you saw, when we were face to face we were about the same size, the same complexity. The only reason he's champion at 154 is because it's where he could become champion the easiest. Even if I come in lighter, it's an advantage for me because I'll have more speed," Gomez said.
