In the immediate aftermath of Saul "Canelo' Alvarez (48-1-1, 34KOs) capturing the WBO middleweight title by halting Liam Smith in nine rounds on Saturday night at the AT&T Stadium near Dallas, Texas, the focus turned to one Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (36-0, 33KOs).
Alvarez and Golden Boy Promotions stated that they have offered Golovkin two or three times more than he has ever made and Golden Boy CEO Oscar De La Hoya claimed that they had made a "significant'' proposal to Golovkin that was "eight-figures''.
To which Tom Loeffer, the managing director of K2 Promotions (which handles Golovkin's career) told BoxingScene.com - "Everyone knows we would want to make the fight between 'Canelo' and 'Triple G' as soon as possible. We would've made it back last May. So we look forward to making it now as quickly as we can."
When asked to address what was offered to them, all Loeffler would say is - "there has been some negotiating with Golden Boy."
So is this highly anticipated match-up any closer to happening than it was a few months ago before Alvarez dropped the WBC middleweight title?
"That's up to 'Canelo's side how close we are to making the fight," Loeffler said.
Moving forward, in terms of Golovkin's career, the WBA has ordered him to make a mandatory defense against Daniel Jacobs next.
"The plan is to fight Danny Jacobs and if the 'Canelo' fight comes up, that would trump any fight in boxing," Loeffler explained to BoxingScene.
So is Loeffler still optimistic that this fight takes place by next September as previously promised?
"Well again, I can be as optimistic as I want from my side, it's up to 'Canelo' and Golden Boy to make the fight and certainly from our side we'd make the fight."
Loeffler didn't want to elaborate too much on what has been discussed specifically with Golden Boy, he did say - "the one thing that was not an issue was the weight that they would fight at - 160 pounds."
So when will Loeffler have his next set of discussions with Golden Boy regarding this match-up?
"My telephone is on," he said, with a slight chuckle - "Just like it was after the (Amir) Khan fight."
