Abel Sanchez, trainer for IBO/WBA/IBF middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs), says a unification with WBC middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs) is the biggest fight in boxing.
Golovkin, who also holds the WBC's interim championship, is the mandatory challenger to Canelo's title.
The World Boxing Council has given permission to both fighters to have a single interim bout before facing each other in the fall.
Golovkin will take on unbeaten IBF mandatory challenger Dominic Wade on April 23rd at the Forum in Los Angeles, California. Canelo defends his title on May 7th against British superstar Amir Khan at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The winner of Canelo-Khan will have to being immediate negotiations with Golovkin, provided he wins in April. Canelo and Golovkin are huge betting favorites to win their fights.
"A lot of people are waiting for that fight. That's the next big fight in boxing," Sanchez said.
"Canelo came to my gym around 2011 and I believe that he's improved very much. He and his trainer 'Chepo' [Reynoso] are doing great work. The situation with Canelo is that he stepped up to fight the best, which was Floyd Mayweather - and he lost. While my fighter is still undefeated. We never fought Mayweather, because he didn't want to face [Golovkin]. It remains to be seen if Canelo learned enough to overcome an undefeated fighter like Golovkin. Is Canelo good? Yes he is - but my fighter is better."
