Two weeks ago, UFC superstar Conor McGregor had some critical comments about two of the biggest names in the sport, Mexican sensation Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.
Canelo will challenge Golovkin for the middleweight crown, in the most eagerly anticipated fight of the year, on September 16th from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
McGregor made his professional boxing debut last Saturday night, also at T-Mobile, when he was stopped in the tenth round by five division champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. After the fight, McGregor expressed his desire to continue in the sport of boxing. But, he admits that his next fight is going to take place in the UFC, where he still holds the lightweight championship.
McGregor said he wasn't a fan of Canelo or Golovkin - informing reporters that fighters like Vasyl Lomachenko and Guillermo Rigondeaux are more of his favlor.
The MMA star is not really looking forward to the Canelo-Golovkin showdown, and would much rather see Lomachenko and Rigondeaux mix it up.
“I’m not really too much of a fan of either of those. I think Canelo is a little bit flat on his feet. When I watch footage of him, I just see him getting peppered. He has no feet under him. Golovkin, I think, came into this camp badly out of shape. I’m looking at his camp up at Big Bear and I just see a drained individual. Although they’re supposedly up there, I don’t really think they are," McGregor said.
Abel Sanchez, the head trainer of Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs), was short and sweet when advised of McGregor's statements.
“I think you have to consider the source,” Sanchez said. “You’re talking about a guy that never had an amateur fight or been in the ring with an elite fighter commenting on something he knows nothing about.”
