Golden Boy Promotions Vice President Eric Gomez wants the critics to be fair when discussing the situation between middleweight champions Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.
Golovkin, who holds the WBA/IBO/IBF world titles, is the mandatory challenger to Canelo's WBC championship.
Canelo (46-1-1, 32 KOs) will defend his title on May 7th against Amir Khan at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
If Canelo wins his upcoming fight, the World Boxing Council has already issued an order which directs him to face Golovkin in the fall or lose his title.
Canelo and Golovkin are at odds over the weight. Canelo is not willing to face Golovkin at the full middleweight limit of 160-pounds. He wants a catch-weight of 155.
As he stated in an earlier brief on BoxingScene.com, Gomez believes the critics are coming down hard on Canelo, but allowing GGG to get a pass for refusing to face former super middleweight king Andre Ward at the full division limit of 168. Golovkin's handlers stood firm on a catch-weight of 164 for that contest.
Unlike Ward, Canelo holds a piece of the middleweight crown and he will be stripped of that belt if he refuses to face Golovkin in the fall.
Canelo and Gomez maintain that the Mexican superstar is not a legitimate middleweight and sees no reason for a Golovkin fight to take place at 160.
“We have a big commitment with Khan and we’re not going to do anything on this [Golovkin talk] until after the fight,” Gomez said to the Los Angles Times.
“To be fair, there was an offer for Golovkin to fight Ward and he didn’t want to move up … so be fair. Of course, this fight can happen. We’re going to sit down, analyze everything and then go from there.”
