Mexican legend Erik Morales believes weight will be a major factor in the potential showdown between his countrymen, Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (48-1-1, 34KOs) and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (49-2-1, 32KOs).
The two sides are discussing a catch-weight involved of 165-pounds. Canelo, who holds the WBO junior middleweight title, would move up from 154-pounds, while Chavez Jr. would come down from the super middleweight limit of 168.
The fight would headline an HBO Pay-Per-View event on May 6th. At the moment, the biggest issue with finalizing Chavez-Canelo is the money.
Morales like the fight and he's on the fence regarding the winner. He believes the terms of the fight, especially weight, could set the tone for the outcome.
"I like it, but it will be very difficult to organize," Morales told Ramon Trevino. "We have to wait for what kind of terms are established in the fight. Because the difference in height and weight may be a factor. Canelo measures 1.75 meters and weighs 154 pounds, meanwhile, Chavez Jr. stands at 1.85m and weighs 168 - two divisions above."
"They would also have to agree on how much they are going to [weigh on the day of the] fight. That can become a weapon for or against the fighters. It would be very interesting to analyze [that fight]."
After 17 months of inactivity, Julio César Chávez Junior returned to the ring in Monterrey earlier this month, where he defeated German super middleweight contender Dominik Britsch.
BoxingScene.com reported earlier that Canelo is expected to finalize his plans next week, whether it's going to be against Chavez Jr. or a possible fight with WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders. The World Boxing Organization recently made Canelo the mandatory challenger to Saunders' title. That fight would also be targeted for Cinco De Mayo weekend. Saunders won't come cheap and he is unknown to American and Mexican fight fans.
