Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya has big plans for WBC/WBA junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs). After unifying the titles on Saturday night with a decision victory over Austin Trout, the Mexican star is looking for big things in the fall. Canelo wants to return on Mexican Independence Day Weekend, September 14th, in a major fight.
At the top of Canelo's list is Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26KOs), who defends his title on May 4th in Las Vegas against Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero (31-1-1, 18KOs). If a deal with Mayweather cannot be reached, or Guerrero pulls of a major upset, then another good possibility for the fall is former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30KOs) of Puerto Rico.
"We have very big plans for the Canelo Alvarez. What I will do is invite [Canelo] to sit and watch the Mayweather fight on May 4, to study [Mayweather] and then make a decision. Canelo wants Mayweather, but Floyd has to beat Guerrero first and that is not an easy fight. [Cotto and Mayweather] are both options, but Canelo Alvarez has said that he wants to fight the best and the best is currently Floyd Mayweather. But we have to see what will happen on May 4 because there is no guarantee [that Mayweather will win]. Guerrero is tough. If there is a day where Floyd could lose his undefeated record, it would be on May 4th," De La Hoya told GDA Deportes.
