Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya chimed in on the hot topic of the hour.

Next month, De La Hoya's star fighter - Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (45-1-1, 32KOs) - will challenge WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33KOs).

The World Boxing Council has ordered the Cotto-Canelo winner to make a mandatory defense against IBO/WBA/IBF middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs).

Based on the obvious dispute with the weight limit, it doesn't appear that Canelo is looking to fight Golovkin any time soon.

Canelo made it known that the only way a fight with Golovkin is going to take place, is if GGG agrees to meet him at a catch-weight of 155-pounds. The bout with Cotto is taking place at 155 and Canelo's last three fights have been stipulated at the same weight limit.

Because the fight [with Cotto or Canelo] would be a mandatory defense, Golovkin is not wiling to budge from his position of fighting at the full middleweight limit of 160.

De La Hoya agrees with his fighter, stating that Canelo is not a real middleweight. He says a showdown with Golovkin will eventually happen, but it doesn't appear like it's going to happen next.

"Canelo is fighting Cotto because he wants that world title, but he’s a junior-middleweight, not a middleweight,” said De La Hoya to The Los Angeles Times. “Plus, he’s a guy who doesn’t like to talk about future fights, especially with this job at hand.

“After Cotto, we can start talking about the others. As for ‘GGG,’ yes, eventually that fight’s going to happen.”
