Former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30KOs) spoke to BoxingScene.com about two of the biggest fights taking place in the first half of 2013.
On April 20th in San Antonio, WBC 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (41-0-1, 30KOs) will face WBA beltholder Austin Trout (26-0, 14KOs) in a high stakes unification. Last September in New York City, Cotto lost a hard fought twelve round unanimous decision to Trout.
"That's going to be a tough fight [for both of them]. Canelo has his strength and Trout has his quickness. It will be an interesting fight to watch. I did the best I could in the Trout fight, but we have to wait and see what Canelo is capable of doing and if Trout comes with the same attitude to fight [as he did in my fight]. [Canelo] is a champion for a long time and Austin is a champion for a long time too. This fight is what we need in boxing - the best fighter against the best fighter and we'll see who the best fighter is," Cotto told BoxingScene.com.
And on May 4th, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26KOs) will defend his WBC welterweight crown against Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero (31-1-1, 18KOs).
Cotto gave Mayweather a very tough fight on May 5th of last year, but lost a spirited twelve round unanimous decision. The Puerto Rican star believes Guerrero is going to make things very tough for Mayweather.
"Guerrero is a tough fighter, a strong fighter, he's a warrior in the ring and I know he's going to give us a good fight. Mayweather is used to bringing a good show, but I know Guerrero is going to give us his best to win this fight," Cotto said.
