Mexican legends Julio Cesar Chavez, Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera don't always agree, but the three of them view Saul 'Canelo Alvarez (45-1-1, 32KOs) vs. Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs) as the 'biggest fight in boxing.'
Golovkin, who has the IBO/WBA/IBF middleweight titles, is the mandatory challenger to Canelo's WBC championship.
The World Boxing Council has ordered the two of them to face each other in the fall. Both have interim bouts already scheduled.
Golovkin is back on April 23, when he defends his belts against undefeated Dominic Wade at the Forum in Los Angeles, California. Canelo defends his WBC title against British star Amir Khan on May 7th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Should both champions come out on top, the WBC will mandate the two of them to begin negotiations for a fall meeting.
All three Mexican legends were asked for their opinions on what they believe is the current mega-fight in the sport. Canelo vs. Golovkin was the unanimous choice.
"Canelo vs. Golovkin is what we are all waiting for. It's the fight everyone wants to see. That would be a difficult test for Canelo," Chavez said.
Morales sees Golovkin as the opponent who Canelo can beat to silence the critics.
"There will always be a lot of criticism on Canelo until he truly proves what he can do in the ring. For the sake of his career, Canelo needs to face Golovkin and beat him," said Morales.
Barrera feels Canelo has the skills to win that fight.
"Canelo has the quality to beat Golovkin. He has impressive skills and we saw that against Miguel Cotto, whom he boxed him in a different way [from his previous fights]," Barrera said.
