Eddy Reynoso, trainer of Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (47-1-1, 33KOs), is confident his fighter would overcome the challenge of IBO/IBF/WBC/WBA middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (35-0, 32KOs).
Canelo and Golovkin have a verbal agreement to face each other in September of 2017. They were ordered to face each other earlier this year, by the World Boxing Council, but Canelo vacated his title and then Golovkin was named the WBC champion by default.
Canelo is back on September 17th, at 154-pounds, when he faces WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith.
If Canelo wins next month, there is strong indication that he might face WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders, at the 160-limit, on a date in December.
Golovkin plans to return on September 10th when he defends his title against IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook, and then a date in November or December is likely.
"Golovkin is a very disciplined fighter. He is a strong fighter with a very good punch, but he doesn't seem very fast or have great combinations. He is a big puncher, strong, comes forward. That more or less what I see," Reynoso told ESPN Deportes.
"For Canelo it would be a tough, tough fight. Canelo will come away with his hand lifted [in victory], but it will be hard because [Golovkin] is always right there throwing punches and coming forward."
Reynoso is not worried about the critics who bash Canelo for not facing Golovkin this coming fall.
"Every boxer has been criticized. Every great fighter is criticized for choosing this or that opponent, not to confront the fighters that people wanted at the time. How can anyone say that Saul is afraid, because a boxer risks everything when they get in the ring. Whoever says that a boxer is afraid is wrong, because they are willing to risk their life in the ring. In this situation the subject is business," Reynoso said.
