World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman would love for his organization to create a special belt for the potential all-Mexican battle between superstars Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (49-2-1, 32KOs) and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (48-1-1, 34KOs).
Because the fight would take place at a catch-weight of 165-pounds, there wouldn't be a title at stake. Canelo, who holds the WBO junior middleweight title, would move up from 154-pounds, while Chavez Jr. would come down from the super middleweight limit of 168.
The fight would headline an HBO Pay-Per-View event on May 6th. The financial details are still being negotiated between the two sides.
A fight of this magnitude deserves a special championship belt at stake, says Sulaiman.
"A fight between two icons, which does represent a lot for the world of boxing, it would be an honor for us to recognize it with a commemorative belt," said Sulaimán.
Although negotiations are under way and there is nothing confirmed, Sulaiman has made it clear that it would be very important for the world boxing.
"It has been talked about for a long time, it is a fight that's been considered for many years. If it happens, it's going to be important for Mexico and the entire boxing world, and two Mexicans climbing in the ring would be interesting. I do not know if it is confirmed," he said. .
As he pointed out during the 54th WBC Annual Convention in Hollywood, Florida, Sulaiman reiterated that they are willing to give their support to the management of the fight - if the boxers and promoters ask for it. He also warned that if Canelo-Chavez is finalized, the loser will take a big career hit.
"Whoever loses, if the fight happens, will lose a lot - but it's a fight that people want to see. If it happens right now or later on - it's a fight that interests Mexico and the world," he concluded.
