Eddie Reynoso, head trainer of Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs), believes the long-anticipated clash between his fighter and undefeated IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight world champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) could happen this year.
Canelo is scheduled to fight his country rival, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., on May 6th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Should Canelo win, a fight with Golovkin could take place in September during Mexican Independence Day weekend.
"We want to first do the fight with Chavez Jr. and then we'll see. The truth is that we have always wanted the important fights, against opponents that generate good expectations for Saúl. What happens is that when the fight has been offered to their representatives, they have not met all the requirements [to finalize the deal]. Saul has fought with opponents that were much more intelligent, better than Golovkin and they have also have represented good business, that is why we have faced them," Reynoso said to ESPN Deportes.
Golovkin was in action last month when he won a twelve round decision over Daniel Jacobs. It was Golovkin's first twelve rounder and also snapped his 23 fight knockout streak.
There is still no word if Golovkin intends to go forward with a plan to fight in June.
"Golovkin is already getting to Saul's level in terms of attractiveness, so we think the fight can happen this year," Reynoso said. "We want [to face him], because it's a fight that will generate a lot of money, which will be a big deal. It is a fight in which the styles are going to gel, with two boxers who like to come forward, who are at their best, who are winning.
"Generally, boxers like Golovkin, who are punchers, are always hindered by elusive boxers, those who move, who constantly change their guard. Golovkin was matched against a slippery opponent [in Jacobs], who worked by moving around very well and used that type of boxing."
